baby born with two heads: Poverty Results in Serious Birth Defects

28-year-old Urmila Sharmagave birth via Caesarean on Wednesday to conjoined twins.

“Yes this report is perfectly true that we have delivered a female baby having two heads,” Dr. Ashish Sehgal, the CEO of Cygnus JK Hindu Hospital, told ABCNews.com in an email. “She is presently alive and healthy.”

After she experienced pain two weeks ago, Urmila and her husband Subhash, a bicycle factory laborer, went to Sonipat’s Cygnus J.K. Hindu Hospital. It was there that they learned Urmila was having twins with serious birth defects. They then told doctors that Urmila never had an ultrasound because they didn’t have enough money to get one.

The girls have one body with two esophagi and trachea, two spines, two necks and two heads. Given that they share vital organs, separation isn’t an option. Dr. Ashish Sehgal, the CEO of Cynus J.K. Hindu Hospital, stated when the twins were born that “she” was healthy. This seemed to indicate at the time that the hospital was considering saving one twin over the over.

Doctors commonly consider twins in this situation to have a low chance of survival because a single body can have difficulty trying sustaining life for two people.

After several days of care in Cygnus J.K. Hindu Hospital’s intensive care unit, the twins were then moved to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital for treatment and care.

The New York Daily News reports that the babies’ Urmila couldn’t afford an ultrasound and didn’t know she was delivering conjoined twins.

“We only came to know she was carrying conjoined twins after an ultrasound two weeks ago but it was too late to do anything by then,” Dr Shikha Malik, who delivered the baby, said.

According to Dr. Minu Bajpai, the pediatric surgeon at AIMS who is overseeing the twins’ healthcare, doctors are trying to understand how the girls are fused together and help them fight off a respiratory infection. Urmila and Subhash are still at Cygnus J.K. Hindu Hospital and haven’t yet met their daughters.
