Boeing’s Biggest Bird Takes Flight

Boeing’s newest, and biggest plane has officially taken flight on its maiden voyage. The Boeing 747-8 is one massive airliner at a whopping 250 feet long – 18 feet longer than any other 747 – and the wingspan stretches an impressive 224 feet from tip to tip, which surpasses the previous largest 747 width by a good 13 foot margin.

Compared to the heaviest commercial plane, the Airbus A380 which weighs in at 1.2 million pounds, the 747-8 is a lightweight, coming in at just 975,000 pounds at its maximum load. However the 747-8 is still 10 feet long than the Airbus. The test flight on February 8th was the first of many, as Boeing will add two more 747-8’s to its test runs over the next six plus months.

The inaugural flight wasn’t without some consternation, as this particular model is well behind production schedule, and was originally expected to be released early last year. Commercial versions of the plane are still more than a year away, and Boeing has conceded that as of right now, this model is not profitable, and the company currently cannot forecast, if or when the giant plane will begin seeing dollar amounts in the black.
