With more than 100 complaints about the power steering in Toyota’s 2009 and 2010 Corolla, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened investigations into these complaints. The NHTSA has demanded that Toyota produce engineering reports, internal communications, and owner complaints, as well as report and employee who knew of these problems.
On February 24th Yoshimi Inaba, Toyota’s North American President, is set to appear in front of Congress’s House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and then in front of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on the 25th, to discuss the investigation and possible recall of Toyota’s vehicles. Akio Toyoda, CEO of Toyota, has stated that he will not be appearing in front of the committees, and that he has confidence in Yoshimi Inaba. Akio Toyoda’s decision has caused a stir within Congress. However, Toyoda has not ruled out the possibility of traveling to the United States.
The Corolla is one of the eight models that Toyota has stopped selling due to the accelerator pedal issue. Since, the power steering affects the tires and brakes, and with the complaints to the NHTSA about drivers’ trouble staying in lanes at highway speeds, a recall for the Corolla may be imminent.
