Wal-Mart is Set to Pay Millions in Discrimination Suit

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. settles a sexual discrimination lawsuit with a whopping $12 million payout and a promise to change their hiring practices.

The warehouse in question, located in London, Ky., allegedly did not consider women for jobs; this is an illegal practice. As the nine-year-old lawsuit was set to go to trial, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reached a deal on Monday to settle the matter.

Along with the $12 million payout Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has promised, in a five-year consent decree with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, to hire women for the next 50 order-filler positions. They have also promised to offer women half of the following 50 positions and a third of positions thereafter.

The suit began in 2001 when the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Wal-Mart Stores Inc. alleging it hired younger men instead of women for jobs in the southeastern Kentucky warehouse. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. denied the charges.

This is not the end of their legal woes as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is also facing a separate lawsuit for gender bias. This suit involves millions of current and former female employees; it is the largest of its kind in the history of the United States.
