Children’s Bike Bell Recall

Once again parents are having to remain extra-vigilant to keep their children safe from harm over another toy manufactured in China. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has advised Do It Best Hardware stores to issue a recall for bicycle bells sold in Do-It Best and Dollar Stores from August 2008 through August 2009.

The bells, geared toward children. are red, black and white, and have “I (heart) My Bike” printed on the top of them. They were sold in a green and white package. After testing, high amounts of lead were found in the red paint on the bell.

Excessive lead is especially dangerous in children, who absorb its toxicity at a greater rate. In many cases, this is caused by young children who touch items, and then put their fingers in their mouth, causing the lead to enter the body. In children, high lead levels have been known to cause delayed growth, behavioral problems, learning disabilities, as well as other possible health problems.

No incidents have been reported as of yet from this toy, but the CPSC is urging parents who have this toy in their household to return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund.
