Google Street View Adds More Canadian Cities

Nine more Canadian cities were added to Google’s Street view service, raising the overall total to 20. The service which launched in 2007, offers online 360 views of over 250 cities worldwide. These views are compiled from a series of ground level images and they’re designed to give viewers the experience of actually being in the city.

The online application allows users to search for specific addresses in the cities offered, and they are given a panoramic viewpoint from that location. Cars with cameras mounted on them are used to capture the images. Google blurs faces and license plates in order to protect the privacy of citizens. This was done in response to complaints from the Canadian privacy commissioner.

Google has been adding images for Canadian cities since the service initially launched. The nine cities added were Edmonton, Victoria, Saskatoon, Nanaimo, B.C., St. John’s, N.L, Sudbury, Ont., London, Ont., Winnipeg, Sherbrook, and Que. These join the already listed cities Vancouver, Whistler, Squamish, B.C., Hamilton, Kitchener, Ont., Waterloo, Ont., Banff, Alta., Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and Halifax.

Google also announced that they were in the process of capturing images of the venues for the 2010 Olympic Games, and these will be Canada’s first special section on the site.
