The Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic Game was played on the first day of 2010, and it pleased the over 38,000 fans in attendance with the day’s brand of classic ice hockey. As the first NHL Winter Classic game to feature a win from the home team, fans of the Boston Bruins cheered on their team’s 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime.
Though the game did not see the romantic snowfall that some previous outdoor games had, the event was marked with cold weather that added to the classic feel of the NHL Winter Classic. Despite the fact that the low temperature exhibition of on-ice talent was ultimately won by Boston’s finest, the countless fans of the Flyers were thrilled with a game that was close to the end.
Up until the final goal in overtime, the two teams were evenly matched and some have said that the game had the feel of a playoff game to it. Moreover, the NHL made sure to turn the game into an entertainment spectacle complete with a stealth plane flyover, and the fans were further entertained when the first fight in NHL Winter Classic history broke out. Shawn Thornton of the Bruins and the triumphant Dan Carcillo squared off before their frigid boxing match gave both men five minuets in the penalty box.
With an opening temperature that threatened to near freezing, the game was yet another classic that can truly ascertain the name Ice Bowl.
