More Of Canada Now Available On Google Street View

This Tuesday, Google Canada revealed more than 130 Canadian cities to be viewed in a 3-D environment in Google street view mode. The coverage includes most of Southern Canada along the border with the United States, extensive sections of Alberta – Saskatchewan mountain territory and areas of interest in Northwestern British Columbia as well as Yukon. Authorities further commented that regions of Labrador and Nunavut will be included in a future upgrade.

A quick evaluation reveals that Google GPS camera mounted trucks have done a good job of displaying high resolution imagery clearly displaying such minute features as text on roadside signboards to litter content in garbage containers.

According to a statement by Jonathan Lister, the purpose of providing such a detailed imagery is to allow individuals to experience place which otherwise would not be possible without a physical presence. Moreover, Google street view can also act as an information portal for visitors, real estate agents, educationalists and people from all walks of life. Real Estate agents across Canada are excited about the launch as agencies can show prospective clients a 360 view of the neighborhood before taking the client to their potential apartment. Now, Google Canada has also taken their trucks to the snow rigged Olympic Mountains of Whistler so that users can track their favorite runs or enjoy an aerial view of the village.

It should be noticed that the technology does not provide live feeds but relies on thousands of still images taken at a previous date. Therefore, surfers may come across interesting visuals including strikes, celebrations and similar events.

In fact, few hobbyists have made it a habit of locating interesting images from Google street views and posting it on the internet. Such pastimes have also led to new discoveries.

The roll out of Google street view coincides with the launch of Google Map function of favorite places. Together, these technologies will bridge gaps by allowing users to experience Canadian streets, ‘As it is’.
