Canadian Privacy Commissioner Reviewing Google Buzz

Google’s newest email product, the Google Buzz, has received quite a bit of criticism over the past few week and is now drawing the attention of the United States Federal Trade Commission. A complaint filed yesterday to the US Federal Trade Commission stated that the new social networking too may violated many privacy laws.

Google added Buzz as a new social networking tool this week. The Google Buzz is free and compliments the already popular Gmail and Google Chat functions. Many users of the Google Buzz have complained that the service automatically included them in online social networks based on the contacts that they already have. Google has since tweaked the Google Buzz, which will no longer automatically create social networks. It will also no longer connect Buzz users to others pictures as well.

The FTC will most likely begin investigating as to whether any consumers were actually harmed by the Google Buzz. The FTC has already demanded that Google give their email users a choice as to whether they want to use Buzz as opposed to automatically enrolling them into the program.

The Google Buzz has also drawn the attention of Canada’s privacy commissioner who plans to investigate whether Google is following their privacy laws.
