Moir and Virtue Add Another Gold for Team Canada

Another gold medal was added to Canada’s medal count last night as Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir win the ice dance competition at the Vancouver Winter Games. This is the country’s first gold medal in the event.

Virtue and Moir skated to “Symphony No. 5” by Gustav Mahler, and finished with a combined score of 221.57 with a score of 11.42 in the free-dance portion of the event.

These two skaters are among Canada’s newest superstars. With hard work and determination, they attempt to go as far as they can, even past the ISU world championships next month. They not only remember where they came from, but how they have arrived at one of the most decorated sporting events in the world.

Neither of them ever thought about cashing in on their Olympic success — Moir and Virtue are more concerned about paying back their families for all the sacrifices they have given to them.

Moir also plans to use some of the funds to pay respects to the Pacific Coliseum, the place where Monday’s free-dance and medal ceremonies were held.

Scott is taking in the roller-coaster event with stride. Both Virtue and Moir have spoken to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Mayor of Vancouver along with the Premiere of British Columbia, Gordon Campbell. He even received a call from the Edmonton Oilers head coach, Pat Quinn.

Virtue is from London, Ontario and calls the recent events a whirlwind. Neither her or her skating partner have an agent, but have talked to people with whom they both trust. They both have opportunities for their future in mind.

Regarding being on the Wheaties cereal box, Scott states, “Cereal box is very easy. I had a great group of friends and I feel very lucky to have had such a great group. They always kept me on the straight and narrow path, kept me away from all the peer pressure things that high school kids go through, drugs, alcohol, that stuff. They made sure I was on the path even if they weren’t. I had one buddy who always said to me, ‘I can’t wait to see you on the Wheaties box.’ So I want to be on that Wheaties box and take that Wheaties box to him. Those guys believed in me so much, you had to believe in yourself.”

He’s referring to Brad Funston, with whom he had complete faith in as a friend.

Both Scott and Tessa knew they had an opportunity in their hands when they were chosen to represent Team Canada in this year’s Winter Games. Neither of them have any regrets on taking advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
