Tory Bill To End Canada Post Strike Includes Lower Wage Settlement
Proposed back-to-work legislation to end the ongoing postal strike includes a wage settlement lower than what Canada Post initially proposed in its last offer. Gayle Bossenberry, speaking for the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, called the legislation “very restrictive,” adding that the union is “disappointed” in the government’s position. The union represents more than 48,000 postal workers.
The legislation, introduced Tuesday by Labour Minister Lisa Raitt, proposes a wage settlement of 1.75 percent during the first year followed by 1.5 percent the second year and 2 percent during the remaining two years of the proposed agreement. Canada Post’s last offer was 1.9 percent during the first three years and 2 percent during the final year of the agreement period.
The estimated difference between the two offers is about $875 per full-time employee during the four-year period of the agreement. The legislation also imposes penalties if either side breaks the agreement.
A similar agreement ended a two-week postal strike in 1997. If passed, the legislation is expected to be challenged in court. Both sides are still talking, but little progress has been made.
Mail service remains suspended to more than 843,000 Canada Post customers, including many businesses that depend on regular mail delivery.

Canada Post Strike Update

Our team jerseys for the Ride to Conquer Cancer happening this Sat. and Sun. are sitting in Toronto. We are devasted. There will be only one ride for cancer that the 27 of us will be together for and we have no jerseys! The lockout means we don’t get them!
So is the lockdown ending cus of the law that the gouverment is putting ? please let me know i have been waiting for 1 month for a package thats rediculus.
Maybe people should just appreciate having a job…Period!
Go back to work there are jobs out there that pays less and lots you people should be lucky you people get almost everything union benefits pension increase in pay sick days and you people want more you people basically holding the mails hostage and you want more
Actually I work in a job that is unionized The pay is not bad about $45,000 per year. Now deduct taxes, union dues, pension, and I`m left with about $24,000 net, that`s just above welfare. The only good thing about a union is the company just can`t fire you for any reason, their is always a process to follow.
I really think that the Postal Strike is getting out of hand. Postal workers get off your butts and stop being greedy. People depend on the mail especially seniors waiting for there cheques!!!!
Exactly. Quit! then see how much your needed in the workforce… many are scraping by because there are far too many professionals seeking jobs and no jobs for them… Its stupid really. We have created technology to make jobs more efficient and then people are laid off because they are not needed and the rich get richer and the poor stay poor and people are upset about the LACK of work haha. Ideally we should be working less and getting paid more for it… how convenient this system is for the people up top. Sorry for the tangent. Hire me for canada post and i won’t complain. I bet its less stressful and pays far more than what im paid now
What we want to hear is, the legislation will guarantee that the mail can never be stopped like this again. Also, I want my mail (my property) now. I suppose if I grabbed a piece of someone elses property and wouldn’t give it back, I would be breaking the law. Aren’t they also?
This is very frustrating for those of us who are waiting on checks for our businesses. What is going to happen here is that we’re all moving to online methods for receiving payments such as Interac Etransfers, and people are switching to online billing, etc. The postal workers are going to hurt themselves in the long run – every person to switches to electronic methods for payments, billing and communication is lost revenue for the postal service. I hope everyone switches to e-options and then they can worry with layoffs instead of this. Might be a needed wake-up call.
Please, please settle this. I have packages in the system that I need ASAP.
To your majesty the union of canada post workers: thank you for the strike, your heroic efforts reduce the junk mails in my mailbox from a box full to zero. please keep up the good work!
I say that postal service should be privatized. That could save a lot of problems. Initially unions were brought in because they were necessary, now unions cause more problems than bring solutions.
There is a Canada Post office in my town that is privatized and unfortunately they make way less money than everyone else
I wish i could make 22 dollars per hour plus benefits and up to 60,000 per year with benefits, without all the worries that come with being self employed. It sure would be nice if one of the requirements before joining a union was that you had to be self employed for a min of 5 years, paying employee salaries out of your company and at times having nothing left to pay yourself. Maybe then all union employees would have a different outlook on their demands, and appreciate what they are getting paid and the benefits they recieve. It is time that people are paid what they are worth not what they want or expect. I say force them back to work at what they are making if they dont like it go get a job somewhere else, i am sure a pile of job applications are sitting on a desk collecting dust, just waiting for a vacant postal job.
How many of these postal workers would make the same kind of money anywhere else?
I cannot believe Canada Post , imagine if the Police or the Hospitals went on strike so their demands are heard. It is obvious that letters in the mail will decline same with yellow pages adds in the print copy. So what the manager needs to do is manage a company that it is in extinsion and that will disapear. It is painfull but is true. A company remains alive while it provides services to customers.
Canada post is making matters worst with this stricke , they deserve to go out of buisness. Going on strike is not the proper way to make claims. I am a small business that is counting in getting checks from many customers and i have not received any mail for the last 2 weeks. It makes me laugh when the offer epost, fuck them, go to work!!!!
There are many people who work at a job for years and have no raise at all. The postal workers should appreciate what they have. They are very lucky.
Be happy you make the amount of money you make to deliver mail and get your rear end back to work like the rest of us. Don’t like your job, then quit, and let someone who would be happy to make that take your place.
Postal workers are also extremely stupid to strike because if people find other ways to conduct their business (such as the government using their internal mail instead of canada post) Canada Post will lose a lot of business and will have to start laying off workers…..so just to get a couple extra bucks they’ll end up losing their jobs.
Why can’t anyone spell?
I think it is VERY WRONG to have Unions with in the Government!!! The Tax Payers are the ones paying them and if they don’t like how things are… GET A NEW JOB!!!! Why should these people or ANY Government employee made more money and have better benefits then someone else doing the same job in the private sector??? The PEOPLE(TAX PAYERS) are paying them!!! With the economy being what it is everywhere around the World, NO ONE SHOULD BE STRIKING!!! I think the Government should FIRE EVERYONE REFUSING to go back to work and replace them!!! GET RID OF GOVERNMENT UNIONS!!!!!
You people make good money. You will not make the same if you were working for the public sector. Also you would not make the benefits you already have.
People are losing there businesses and some people do not have there pensions cheques and cannot even put food on their tables.
why is canada post on strik anyways im getting sick of this me and my wife are hopeing to get our pay staves in the mail thios week but we didnt get anything yet so im getting sick of this please go back to work postils workers so we can get our bills and staves that we need ok
