Alexandre Despatie, the Olympic hopeful slammed his head into the diving board during a practice session. He was attempting the inward three-and-a-half somersault dive at the session in Spain when the accident occurred.
After a surgical procedure lasting almost an hour to close the large 10-centimetre gash in his forehead just below his hairline, Despatie was recovering well.
He tweeted to fans from his bed with the message “Thanks so much for the support everyone!! The surgery went well, and I will give you guys an update soon!!
#olympicdreamstillalive”Although there didn’t appear to be any fractures, there was concern about a possible concussion. Tests were run on his neck and shoulders to check for damage, but nothing was found to be wrong.
Despatie who is from Laval, Que said he has to recover for several weeks before returning to diving and the London Olympics, which begin on July 27.
