The unidentified driver of a passenger vehicle was killed on Wednesday morning at a crossing near Trenton, Ontario when a CN freight train collided with the car and killed the driver. All passenger service on the popular VIA Rail’s Ottawa to Toronto and Montreal to Toronto lines has been temporarily suspended while an investigation of the crash scene takes place. According to a spokesperson at VIA rail, passengers already travelling on five trains in Kingston, Cobourg and Belleville are being held up from continuing onto their destinations.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, the front end of the driver’s vehicle was struck by the CN train, headed from Montreal to Toronto, including 161 cars and two locomotives. There are reports that at least one victim had to be removed from the crushed vehicle by emergency personnel shortly after the collision happened at 10 a.m. just west of Trenton, Ontario. There has been no confirmation of any other passengers in the vehicle or if anyone else was injured in the crash.

It is not known if the driver who was fatally injured was trying to beat the oncoming CN train by attempting to speed across the tracks at Tate Road in Quinte West or if the car had stalled on the tracks at the intersection and the driver was unable to leave the vehicle before the train crashed into the front of the car. It is expected to take at least several hours before any westbound train traffic can resume in the area. At last report, no one aboard the train was injured in the collision which caused one fatality in the passenger car, and the train did not sustain any noticeable damage. Delays are expected to continue until further notice on Via Rail routes 43, 51, 52, 61 and 62.
