Former teen star Corey Haim was laid to rest today after a small private funeral in Toronto, Canada. Haim and his mother are originally from the city and his mother wanted his final resting place to be at his home.

The 38 year old actor was pronounced dead on March 10th after appearing to have suffered from a self-induced prescription drug overdose. His mother Judy Haim, talked with a reporter to clear her son’s name and states the coroner told her the death was due to an enlarged heart.

Haim’s mother originally claimed the city of Toronto would be footing the bill for the memorial, but they say otherwise. It is customary for the city to help those who need financial assistance after an application has been filed. They have not received any such form from Haim’s mother.

The service was attended by 200 friends and family members of the late actor. Notably missing was Haim’s friend and co-star Corey Feldman. Feldman released a statement that he would not be attending the service as a way to respect the family’s privacy. Feldman pleaded with the media to avoid the funeral as well. He is planning a public memorial service that will be held in Los Angeles in the near future.

The city of Toronto is confirming that actor Corey Haim’s funeral will not be paid for by the city. The former teen idol who starred in the classic movie “The Lost Boys” died unexpectedly last week. Many are speculating that the 38 year-old actor died of a drug overdose because of his lifelong struggle with substance abuse. However, the toxicology reports are still pending and the cause of death is still unknown. Haim’s agents have insisted he spent the past few weeks attempting to get clean, and may have incorrectly mixed prescription medications that were given to him by doctors. They deny that any illegal drug use caused Haim’s death.

Haim’s mother, Judy Haim, recently announced the funeral would be financed by the city of Toronto. However, the city’s communications director, Kevin Sack, made a statement denying these claims. Sack said, “The City of Toronto confirms no involvement in funeral costs for Mr. Haim. The City of Toronto has never received an application for assistance with the funeral costs for Mr. Haim.”

Haim’s family has decided to make the funeral a very small service with few attendees. It is for this reason that actor Corey Feldman is not planning on attending his best friend’s funeral. Feldman and Haim were once so close the media often referred to them as “The Coreys”.

In a statement, Feldman said, “The family has decided to make Corey’s funeral on Tuesday a small private affair. Understanding the recent media attention and to be respectful of the family’s wishes I have decided not to attend. Instead I will remain in Los Angeles quietly mourning and planning his memorial.”

Haim will be buried during a small, family-only service at Steeles Memorial Chapel, a Jewish funeral home. The funeral home is located just north of Toronto, in Thornhill.

An investigation in Ontario into deli meats contaminated with listeria now includes the review of five deaths. According to a spokesperson with the province’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, investigators will examine the deaths for any possible connections to the food items from Siena Foods Ltd recently recalled. Some of these recalled products had been distributed throughout Canada. However, investigators are only considering deaths in Ontario for possible links.

Siena Foods spokesperson Andrew Morrison said that there is no connection between the deaths and the two previously recalled Siena Foods meat products. Those meats, the Siena-brand prosciutto cotto cooked ham in particular, have been associated with two non-fatal Ontario listeriosis cases by Dr. Arlene King, Ontario’s chief medical officer. Listeriosis is a dangerous infection caused by the contaminated food.

The recall issued by Siena Foods on Thursday, which included the ham and salami, includes Siena products that have a best-before date between March 8 and March 22 from delis, grocery stores, and specialty food shops in Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. The contaminated prosciutto and mild cacciatore salami was first sold to food stores in bulk and then directly to consumers after January 11, 2010.

Saturday, Siena Foods and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency broadened their warning not to eat certain dried meat products because of possible contamination with listeria monocytogenes. Siena Foods has also has ceased production of its products at its Toronto plant and is working to sanitize the facility alongside the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is investigating fourteen total cases of listeriosis that have been reported this year. This includes the five deaths that the ministry is currently analyzing. The Public Health Agency of Canada was unable or unwilling to say whether there were investigations underway to link Siena meats with listeriosis cases in other jurisdictions.

While the vast majority of iPhone applications are used for entertainment or other frivolous purposes, one new upcoming iPhone app appears to be set to do a lot of good and increase efficiency for one Canadian city.

The city of Edmonton, Alberta, is doing their best to use the technology available through the iPhone to help their city. The city is presently almost done developing a new application that will allow a citizen to report hazards that they see. The application, which is titled “City Watch,” is being developed by Touch Metric.

Through use of the new application, residents or visitors of Edmonton will be able to report hazards to the police department without having to call Edmonton’s non-emergency 311 number. This should add a significant amount of convenience and encourage a citizen to report issues including fallen tree branches or new graffiti. The city officials believe that more citizens would contact the police more frequently if it was easier to do so. It should be noted that this application seems to only be needed for non-emergency crimes. For more serious crimes, calling the police is still recommended.

The new application seems like an excellent idea and is a new way for the average citizen to stay in contact with the city.

The City Watch application will be available for iPhone, iTouch, and iPad users by April 30. The application is expected to be a free application that can be downloaded through the iTunes application store.

The City of Edmonton is encouraging citizens to create their own iPhone applications. The city is now offering a cash prize of $50,000 to the iPhone developer who creates the best application for allowing Edmonton officials to share community information with the citizens of Edmonton. The prizewinner will be announced in October 2010.

Canadian-born actor and former teen heartthrob Corey Haim is dead.

According to the LAPD’s North Hollywood Division, Haim died at 3:30 a.m on Wednesday of an apparent accidental overdose. The coroner’s office said an autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death.

Haim was found unresponsive inside his Oakwood apartment. His mother was with him at the time. He was rushed to the Providence St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Burbank where he was pronounced dead.

The actor had been struggling a long-time drug addiction, which was often the subject of The Two Coreys, his recent A&E pseudo reality series with regular co-star Corey Feldman.

Born in Toronto, Corey Haim shot to fame in the mid-1980s in films such as Lucas, License To Drive, The Lost Boys and Dream A Little Dream – the last three of which also featured Feldman.

However, Haim’s drug problems led his career into a downward spiral when the ’90s hit, which found him starring in mostly straight-to-video films.

Corey Haim was 38.

Canadian money is scheduled to change in late 2011. The country is planning on replacing the cotton-based paper notes with synthetic polymer, which will last two or three times as long as the present bills. The bills will certainly be waterproof. Leaving money in clothing during the wash will no longer pose a problem, not to mention government savings in printing bills with longer durability.

These types of bills have been introduced in Australia and attract fewer germs. The surface makes it difficult for the germs to take a foothold. Remember, many American bills have a trace content of cocaine due to their use by the Drug Lords, whose home is below the U.S. border. Not much in information is presently being released by the Canadian government. Canada will not be the first country with plastic money. It is already in use in Australia.

The flu virus will live a much shorter time on plastic banknotes. Add to this, that liquid spillage and other unwanted items getting on banknotes will make the plastic bill less dirty. It goes to show that financial progress does not have to solely revolve around “monetizing the debt” to bail out Japanese, Arab and Chinese creditors.

Technology – Cell phone giants Motorola plan on bringing freshness to Android phones used in Canada this spring. The new handsets with the MOTOBLUR Interface are eagerly awaited.

MOTOBLURed Out!

Android users in Canada are today realizing that there will be a new kid on the block this spring. Motorola issued a statement saying that they intend to release to the public their Android cell phones, which feature social networking, email, status updates and RSS.

What is not clear as yet is who will carry the new devices or how much they will ultimately cost. The Android 1.5 technology is the primary device, but some models will be being upgraded to the more sophisticated 2.1 soon. So maybe it will be good to wait those extra few weeks in Canada, who knows?

It was thought by Canadian cell phone moguls that Motorola had forgotten about them, but the news that the provider will be forwarding the devices has come as welcome news.

Big Three

Internet chatter is already hailing the move by Motorola as brilliant, with nearly every Android blog containing the story reading a ‘buzzed up’ feeling for Canadian Android users.

The big three cell phones being the ‘BACKFLIP’, DEXT and the ‘QUENCH’ tablet, will all be carrying the new MOTOBLUR Interface, but it seems Motorola are leaving everybody in the dark as to who, what where, when and how many.

This is probably a move to block out competitors from knowing too much about the changes, leaving Motorola in an ideal position to profit heavily from the highly anticipated handsets. In fact these handsets are so eagerly anticipated they could even coin the market by early spring 2010.

Rotten Apple?

It has been suggested that many users prefer Android to Apple’s iPhone, simply because of the varied styles, ease of use and capabilities.

But preference will really meet out this spring when Motorola ring in the changes, as it does look ‘on’ for another ‘Tech War’ involving mobile communications.

Motorola have not set an exact date for the release of the MOTOBLUR devices, but it is thought maybe early April will be an ideal time to go up against several other ‘New Technologies’ that are due to be released.

Victory Sweet for Canada

It was the culmination of the greatly anticipated match up for gold between the U.S. and Canada. Canada brought glory to Vancouver in the final game of the men’s Olympic ice hockey tournament.

It was an intense game with Canada winning 3-2 in overtime.

Jonathan Toews scored for Canada in the first period. It was the only goal until Corey Perry scored to make it 2-0 for Canada. The U.S. answered shortly thereafter to bring the score to 2-1. Finally, the score was even sending the game into overtime.

In some ways the gold medal game was a rematch of last week’s preliminary game in which the U.S. defeated Canada. That game was an upset for Canada, a country that considers ice hockey its national sport. The excitement over the ice hockey tournament had been building for some time. Fans put the pressure on. With the preliminary round loss, the Canadians must have felt the grip on gold loosen just a bit.

Victory prevailed. Sidney Crosby, a Canadian hockey hero who is also a center for the Pittsburgh Penguins, made the golden goal well over 7 minutes into overtime to the enthusiastic cheers of his countrymen. This followed the last second score by the U.S.’s Zach Parise, who sent the puck into the goal with less than 25 seconds left in regulation time. The U.S. had pulled its goalie in order to have an extra attacker on the ice.

That strategy only afforded temporary success for the U.S. in a game that was well-matched with intense action from face-offs to goals. U.S. goalie Ryan Miller had 36 saves. Canadian goalie Roberto Luongo had 34 saves.

This gold medal is the wreath of laurels of Canadian dreams. Since the NHL has permitted players to participate in the Olympic Games, its players can be seen on teams of their various home countries. Of the four Olympics in which NHL players participated, Canada has won two. Overall, Canada has won 8 gold medals in men’s ice hockey. According to some reports, Mike Babcock, this year’s Canadian team coach, became the first coach to secure both a Stanley Cup and Olympic gold.

United States President Barack Obama has lost a bet and now owes Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper a case of beer. The two men made a friendly wager based on the outcome of the Olympic gold medal hockey game Sunday, between the United States and Canada.

Sidney Crosby ended up clenching the win (3-2) for Canada with an overtime goal in the exciting game. Harper can now expect a case of 24 Molson Canadian beer from Obama soon, however a time and date has not yet been set.

The beer, which will cost Obama between $40-45, is bottled by Canada’s oldest brewery, which actually happens to be part of Coors now. Had Obama won the bet, Harper would have had to buy Obama a case of Yuengling beer, which is considered the oldest beer maker in the United States, based in Pennsylvania.

This bet follows a different bet by White House spokesman Robert Gibbs and the Prime Minister’s spokesman, Dimitri Soudas. Apparently the two spokesmen had a wager based upon the winner of the women’s gold medal hockey game. With Canada also winning that game, Gibbs must wear a Team Canada jersey the next time he meets with the press.

Andrew Koenig was found dead in Vancouver’s Stanley Park on Thursday morning after his family and friends conducted their own search.

A representative from the Vancouver Police Department made a statement at 5pm Thursday saying “Andrew’s body was found in the park by friends who had initiated their own search. Our investigations are continuing… We will not release any further details about cause of death. We have no reason to believe foul play was involved.”

The former “Growing Pains” star was last seen on February 14th in Vancouver by a friend and was reported missing when he wasn’t heard from and missed his flight home to Los Angeles on February 16th.

Andrew’s parents both spoke at the press conference, holding back the tears his father Walter said “We’ve already said what a great guy he was and a good human being… He was obviously in a lot of pain… What you can learn from this is that there are people out there who really, really care.”

His mother Judy added, “He was much loved and he had much to contribute in this world. This is the only statement that we are making. Please respect our privacy.”

Andrew had been suffering with depression for years. He was 41 years-old when he died.
