Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington, 57, admitted to the team in a press conference on March 17 that he failed a Major League Baseball drug test, which showed him positive for cocaine. Washington did not deny that he had used cocaine, calling his behavor “stupid and shameful,” but said that he had done so only once during the 2009 season.

Washington apologized to the players and offered to resign from the club, but the Rangers’ president, Nolan Ryan, refused to accept the resignation. Ryan told reporters that “We think of him as part of our family” and said that the Rangers would stand by Washington. The players also expressed support for Washington after his press conference, with third baseman Michael Young saying, “I’ve got his back.”

Washington did not explain when or why he had used cocaine. However, Ryan and general manager Jon Daniels said that Washington had told them privately of the situation that led to his cocaine use, and said that they were confident it would be only a one-time offense.

After failing the test in 2009, Washington underwent Major League Baseball’s nine-month drug rehabilitation program, which he has since completed, and says that he wants the league to continue testing him in the future.

While drug use by players in major league baseball has been the center of public scrutiny for the past decade, for the first time a baseball manager has been in the media for testing positive. Ron Washington, who is the manager of the Texas Rangers, has told the media that he tested positive for cocaine during the 2009 season.

According to reports, Washington told team president, Nolan Ryan, that if he was randomly selected for the drug testing, that he would resign as team manager. Nolan Ryan, who is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, stated that he was initially mad when he heard the news of Washington’s drug use. Ryan then ultimately decided to not accept Washington’s resignation and keep him on as manager.

Since failing the test in 2009, Washington has passed Major League Baseball’s drug testing program. The testing program required him to take three additional drug tests at randomly selected times. Despite the fact that Washington passed through the program, he has requested that Major League Baseball continue to test him. It is unclear at this point whether the MLB will continue to test him or not.

Washington will continue to manage the Rangers in 2010.

Soccer star David Beckham will be forced to miss the World Cup this year due to a surgery on his injured Achilles’ tendon. Beckham was injured during the last minutes of the AC Milan versus Chievo Verona game on Sunday. Beckham, 34, flew to Finland after the game to have surgery on the torn tendon by one of the world’s best specialists.

The surgery on Beckham’s tendon took about one hour to complete and the procedure was very successful. Dr. Sakari Orava, the surgeon who performed the surgery, said, “He is recovering fine, he has been walking with crutches. He can move around a little bit more every day.” While the surgery was a complete success and Beckham is recovering quite well, he will unfortunately have to miss the World Cup on June 11.

When Beckham leaves the hospital in Turku, Finland with wife Victoria Beckham by his side, it is not known where he will go to recuperate. The surgeon suggested that Beckham should avoid a long flight over the Atlantic Ocean for two to three days following the surgery, but even if he does choose to fly immediately after leaving the hospital, Orava said, “The risk is small.”

On Sunday, the NCAA tournament selection committee announced the bracket and seeding for the 2010 tournament. This year’s bracket seems to be one of the most competitive of all time, as it seems more teams than ever have a chance of winning the “Big Dance.”

Presently, the number one overall seed and favorite to win the tournament is the Kansas Jayhawks. The Jayhawks, who one the tournament just two years ago, are led by two seasoned veteran players including Sherron Collins and Cole Aldridge.

Another favorite to win this year’s tournament is Kentucky. The Kentucky Wildcats, who are fresh off of their SEC tournament championship, are led by two of the nation’s best freshman. John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins, who lead the Wildcats, are widely expected to leave Kentucky after this year to enter the NCAA draft.

Like most years, this years NCAA tournament is expected to lead to a lot of illegal gambling as basketball fans across the country will fill out their NCAA brackets. As the tournament is played during the week and during the day, the tournament normally distracts millions of fans across the country. In past years, it has been estimated that the tournament costs businesses billions of dollars in lost business.

Professional golfer Tiger Woods, who has not participated in any golf event in nearly six months, has announced that he will make his return to golf in the beginning of April. Woods, who is widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all-time, will choose The Masters tournament in Augusta, GA as the place of his return.

Many believe that Woods is choosing The Masters because that event provides the media with the fewest media passes and has the more overall controls than any other golf tournament. Others believe that Woods has chosen The Masters in an attempt to rejuvenate his career in dramatic fashion.

Regardless of the reason why he is choosing The Masters, Woods will return to the professional golf circuit as a favorite to win the event. Prior to his announcement, odds makers had stated that Woods would be the odds on favorite if he did win the event.

While Woods appears to be finally ready to return to the public spotlight, he does not seem prepared to publicly deal with his personal scandal. Woods has already announced to the media that he will not address any questions regarding his personal life and he will only talk to them about golf.

The Iowa Hawkeyes, following another disappointing season, have decided to fire their coach.

The announcement follows the Hawkeyes 10-22 finish on the season.

This was their third losing season in a row. Coach Lickliter had a seven year contract with Iowa that was cut short by four years.

The contract was to pay him 1.2 million dollars a year. The Hawkeyes have clearly decided that it was better to take the lose in money, rather than continue to take the loses on the court.

Iowa is now free to hire a new coach as soon as possible but according to the Philadelphia Daily News there is no time line on when that decision will be made. Some other problems brought along by the teams poor performance where low attendance, and therefore low ticket sales. Put simply the team was bleeding money for the last three years.

There is nothing to guarantee that hiring a new coach will change any of these results, but the Hawkeyes decided sticking with Coach Lickliter will not improve anything either. The Hawkeyes have struck a deal with the coach to pay him 2.4 million a year for the remainder of his original contract. This is twice as much as he was originally scheduled to be paid.

Whomever thought row boats were just for rowing gently down the stream are in for a big surprise. Katie Spotz navigated her specially designed row boat across the Atlantic Ocean. This young 22 year old American woman departed from Senegal on January 3rd, 2010 and touched down in Guyana on Sunday, March 14th. She spent the entire journey alone in the row boat though she did have a few high tech features in the boat like a laptop computer.

“Water water everywhere but not a drop to drink.”

Though Katie did break the record of being the youngest person to row across the ocean alone, this watery venture was not only for the purpose of breaking an athletic record. The rowing venture across miles and miles of water was for the benefit of the many people throughout the world who do not have access to clean drinking water.

Though Katie did have clean drinking water during her journey her hopes were to bring awareness to the foundation that helps to bring fresh drinking water to those who do not have it. This brave young woman rowed almost 3,000 miles completely alone as a fundraiser for the Blue Planet Run Foundation.

As the world prepares for this summer’s World Cup, it appears that soccer fans will have to do without one of the world’s most popular players. David Beckham, who is one of the world’s most celebrated athletes, tore his Achilles tendon this past weekend. Beckham, who was largely expected to make the final 23-man roster for the English national team, will likely be out of action for at least six months. This means he will be forced to miss this summer’s World Cup.

Reportedly, the English soccer star was completely devastated by the injury and there was very little anyone could say to console him.

While Beckham’s age had begun to show its signs on the soccer field in recent years, he was still expected to be a key piece on England’s national team. Beckham is scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday. After surgery doctors will be better able to estimate how long it will be before Beckham is able to play again.

While David Beckham has been one of the best soccer players in the world for the past decade, he is often considered more of a celebrity than other professional athletes. Beckham is married to former “Spice Girl,” Victoria Beckham.

Today is a sad day for NFL fans as one of the game’s legendary players passed away. Merlin Olsen, who played for the Los Angeles Rams for 15 seasons, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 69 years old after a long battle with mesothelioma.

Through his 15 year NFL career, which spanned from 1962 through 1976, Olsen starred on the Los Angeles Rams defensive line that was known around the league as the “fearsome foursome.” Olsen was so wildly successful as a defensive lineman that he was named to 14 consecutive pro bowls, which is an NFL record that he shares with Bruce Matthews.

Beyond the 14 Pro Bowl invitations, Olsen received many accolades for his professional football career. Olsen was named to both the 1960s and 1970s all decade teams and was included on the NFL’s 75th Anniversary team. Olsen was elected into both the Professional Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.

After finishing his NFL career, Olsen continued to have enormous professional success. Olsen was a successful actor as he carried prominent roles on “Little House on the Prairie” and “Father Murphy.”

Due to Olsen’s enormous success on and off the field, he was awarded the Walter Camp Man of the Year Award in 1982.

Hall of Famer Merlin Olsen, aged 69, passed away Thursday, March 11 due to mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer usually associated with abestos. Merlin began his professional football career in 1962, already a star. While playing at Utah State he was an All-American, and then a first round draft pick for the Los Angelos Rams. He was chosen to play in fourteen Pro Bowls, and was later selected for the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 1982. He was well know for his hard work and character on and off the field.

Merlin Olsen was also known for his roles in the televison shows Father Murphy and Little House on the Prairie. Many who watched these shows may never have known he was a football legend as well. He participated in fund raising events for children, acted as a spokesman for commercials, and even found time to finish his masters degree in economics.

Merlin Olsen dies, leaving only two of the “Fearsome Foursome” still living. The “Fearsome Foursome” was one of professional football’s most famous defensive lines, playing for the Los Angeles Rams in the 1960’s. The other three were teammates Lamar Lundy, Rosie Grier and David Deacon Jones. He will be remembered for his many contributions to football and society.
