New Zealand specialists are on their way to recover two crates of aged Scotish whisky that are buried in the Antarctic ice.
The whisky is more than 100 years old and is trapped deep in Antarctic ice that was left by Sir Ernest Shackleton a polar explorer back in 1909.
Three years ago the bottles were discovered buried in the ice underneath a hut that Shackleton used on his South Pole expedition. Shackletons expedition failed once he was forced to turn back just about 100 miles from the South pole. The crew had run out of food and the weather was turning bad.
The New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust is going to restore the hut back to its original condition from 1009 and will return the crates of Sctoch to the Cape Royds base after they are restored.
Al Fastier a spokesman for the Trust said “ I think they must have been left by mistake. It’s hard to believe two crates would have been left without drinking them.” He went on to add that there were no plans of opening the bottles to sample the whisky, but Whyte & Mackay, owner of the brand, stated that they would like to sample a bottle to recreate the blend that is a centurey old.
