Pumpkin Pie Shortage Expected

First waffles and now pumpkin pies.

With the holidays just around the corner the traditional pumpkin pie that many families enjoy are about to become more expensive.

What happened was Nestle announced that heavy rains at their farm in Morton, Illinois made it difficult for them to bring in the pumpkin crop.

As a result, the maker that sells nearly 90% of the canned pumpkins nationwide said that it will not can or harvest any more pumpkins this year. According to Nestle they have tired everything possible to bring in the crop this year; however the soggy conditions have made it difficult to effectively harvest the crop with a limited window of opportunity. Because they had similar problems last year means there was no excess pumpkins that they could carry over into this year, resulting in the shortage.

This comes at a challenging time for many Americans who will now have to pay more for their traditional holiday meal because of weather related issues.

What this shows is that in spite the eases in wholesale prices because of the recession there are still a number of different factors that can create shortages at any time.

The shortage of pumpkins this year only highlights this fact.
