Members of global dating site BeautifulPeople.com committed, to me at least, what has to be one of the meanest things possible this week. They voted to get some 5,000 users off the site for having gained a little weight over the holidays. Reports say it might just be an attempt at publicity.
Many people have not even heard of this sight (I know I hadn’t) until this made the papers. The sight allows people to register but does not allow them entrance into the “community” until after a 48-hour wait where the other members are voting on their beauty. Personally, I think that is one ugly policy.
Members of advocacy groups for overweight people are just outraged, saying it only adds to the stigma against fat people.
The majority of people who got the boot came from countries where it is cold over the winter holidays and where it is also a part of their culture to EAT, DRINK, and make merry. The United States had 1,520 people voted off, the United Kingdom 832 and Canada lost 533.
The director of the sight Robert Haines said that people come to the sight to date beautiful people and that is what they should get all the time.
