Two artists have made a big impact on the art world while also bringing attention to America’s housing crisis. Photographer Gregory Holm, along with architect Matthew Radune encased a house entirely in ice. The abandoned home is in Detroit, Michigan, and is meant to be a mediation on the foreclosure and housing crisis in America. The home was put on ice by spraying the empty house with water for a week and allowing it to freeze naturally from Michigan’s frigid winter temperatures. The home is one of tens of thousands of foreclosed homes in Detroit, a city where the foreclosure rates are among the highest in the nation.
While the project has not yet been unveiled to the public, many passers-by have already gotten a glimpse of the home. The artists hope to have lights up to illuminate the structure by Friday. As another aspect of the project, the duo has helped a Detroit woman have a home by paying the back taxes on a foreclosed house for her.
Once the spring season arrives, the artists have another plan for the abandoned house. The pair plans to disassemble the home after the winter so the building materials can be re-used.
