According to the Anatolia news agency, a Turkish teenage girl was found dead and appears to have been buried alive. Apparently, the 16-year old girl was buried alive by her relatives as a punishment for befriending some boys. The girl, Medine Memi, was reported as missing forty days ago but was just found dead sitting up in a hole dug inside the girl’s family’s chicken coop.
According to the source, the girl’s father and grandfather were both arrested and are presently being held by authorities awaiting a trial. Based on the results of the autopsy which showed much dirt in the girl’s mouth and lungs, it appears the girl was tied up and buried alive. Amazingly, the girl did not appear to be beaten prior to being thrown in the hole and it did not seem that she was able to resist being buried.
In Turkey, the tragic event is considered an “honor killing” in which the entire family will now lose their honor because of the horrific event. Honor killings are normally reserved for women who were found guilty of being involved in extra marital affairs.
Prior to finding the girl, police were given an anonymous tip that the family had buried the girl in the back yard.

I support what this family did. I know people have a hard time understanding burying the girl, but they have ways different than our own. It is not right to apply our ethical standards to another group of people.

There are no words to describe what horror this young girl must have been feeling while her father and grandfather heaped soil onto her bound body. Knowing each gasp of air might be her last. This in itself is enough to make me want to torture them unmercifully. I then realize that in Turkey female children are not as valuable as male children. The female is seen as subserveant and a slave of sorts. The female has little or no value. They can just be thrown away without a care in the world. They are property. Treated no better than dogs in many cases. I am in shock…. my heart goes out to this childs mother who must be devistated and unable to speak out as she just may suffer the same fate.

There are many cultures in which females are devalued. With Jesus, women’s status was always elevated – freeing them from the bondage of cultural disparity and religious depravity. I am so sorry that this young woman’s life was ended so horrifically and that so many other girls have and will be subjected to such a crime often found in muslim societies.

1. First, this act was done by a Kurdish family. Turks have spent years trying to civilize Kurds, but they are still the same. Too bad though that such behaviors Kurds demonstrate, including their terrorism against Turkey, is supported by the West.
2. In Turkey, girls (and boys) have sex before marriage much more often than American or Canadian boys/girls do, and they do not get punished (or made subject to an honor killing). This is an individual act, and could have happened anywhere. We hear similar stories in the news about US/Canada all the time. Just like you wouldn’t generalize it to the whole North America and call North Americans savage, etc., the same should go for Turkey, one of the most modern countries in the world.
I can’t freakin believe that some people have the nerve to do that… to their family! We should hang them on a branch of a tree by their private parts and wack them like a pinata then we should burry them alive.
