Bishop Margot Kaessmann, Germany’s first female bishop, resigned on Wednesday after being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Kaessmann, 51, who has been dubbed by the media as a mixture between Demi Moore and Mother Teresa, was arrested last Saturday after she was pulled over for running a red light close to her home. Once she was taken to the police station she was given a breathalyzer test; prosecutors said she was found to be three times over the legal limit for alcohol. She now faces a large fine as well as the loss of her driver’s license.
Kaessmann told reporters that she made a grave decision that she deeply regrets and that she cannot remain in an office with the authority that is required of her.
Kaessmann headed one of Germany’s largest protestant churches. She won the post last October after taking 93 percent of the church conference’s vote. She was widely seen as someone that ordinary people could relate to.
The mother of four daughters drew attention to herself in 2007 when she announced she was divorcing her husband, also a pastor. Some sources are reporting an unidentified man was sitting next to Kaessmann in the car at the time of her arrest.
