A small town Mississippi high school has canceled its prom over what some would consider a very unfair issue. It seems as though one female eighteen-year old senior planned to bring her female sixteen-year old girlfriend to the school’s prom as her date. She also planned on wearing a tuxedo to the formal dance. However, upon hearing this information, the Itawamba County Agricultural High School decided they would just cancel the prom all together.
The American Civil Liberties Union has stepped in and has stated that by telling students they cannot bring their gay partners to prom is against the constitutional rights of the students. They feel that Constance McMillen and her girlfriend are being treated unfairly over their sexuality. The ACLU has also tried to convince the school to reverse its decisions.
The school does not appear to be considering that option. Instead, they have encouraged the community to consider holding a private prom for the juniors and seniors of the school instead. Many of the students are upset that their prom has been cancelled and are taking sides as to who should be blamed. The ACLU did give the school a deadline of today to make their decision.
