Alaskan Teacher Killed by Wolves


A teacher jogging on a deserted road near Perryville, Alaska was attacked and killed authorites have stated. Candice Berner, a 32 year old special education teacher was on a deserted road when the supposed attack happened.

Berner was jogging in the vicinity of Chignik Lake. Chignik Lake is a fishing village on the Alaska Peninsula that has a wolf for a mascot in the school. The stuffed wolf was taken down after the incident.

Snowmobilers that found the body after tracking blood from the trail reported the incident. First reports out stated the wolves chased Berner and when they caught her they killed. The body was dragged off the trail and partially eaten.

Two out of the pack of wolves involved were shot and killed this week. The wolves will be closely examined to determine if they were involved with Berner’s death. Dr. Kimberly Beckman will use DNA evidence from the bites on Berner’s body and samples from the wolves to make the conclusion. The animals will also be tested for diseases to determine if there was another reason for the attack.

Wolf attacks on humans are rare and this is the first one in the United States since the 80s.
