On Wedneday, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia announced that the country has deemed the works of L. Ron Hubbard and his Scientology movement as ‘undermining the values of the citizens of the Russian Federation’. Anyone in the country found to be in possession of any materials by Hubbard can face up to 15 days in jail and or a $100 fine.
Papers were discovered by customs officials in the Siberian towns of Surgut and Khanty-Mansiyk. Further investigation revealed 28 items which included books, audio tapes, and videos of Hubbard and had come from the United States. After being examined by psychiatrists and other medical professionals, the Russian Federation deemed the materials not suited for Russian citizens.
As of now, there has not been any kind of response of statements made by the Los Angeles based Church of Scientology in which author L. Ron Hubbard was the founder. Last year, the European Court of Human Rights filed a lawsuit against the Russian government defending the Scientology chapters in Surgut for not listing them as religious organizations. The Moscow Times has reported that Russia flatly denies the Church of Scientology as an organized religion and also noted that Germany has deemed it as a commerical enterprise.
