Shop Before Canada Day For Big Savings On Certain Items

Tomorrow is the day that Canadians will celebrate their 143rd birthday of Canada with exciting firework displays, festivals, parades, music and family picnics. This day is in remembrance of events that took place on July 1, 1867, when the Canadian federal government was created by the British North American Act.

Canada day is always celebrated on July 1 with the exception of if it falls on a Sunday, then it is celebrated on the following day. That makes today the last day to save some money while shopping due to the new harmonized sales tax that will go into effect starting tomorrow for Ontario and British Columbia residents, which will then be included in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick’s HST tax, which has already been applied to these areas.

This new tax will not affect the cost of everything, but is limited to only about 17 percent of purchased items. The HST tax will not affect most items that did not have PST charges previously. The Ontario Ministry of Revenue stated that purchasers may not notice the tax on items they buy, but most likely businesses have paid this tax many times during production, distributing costs and retail, which raise their prices to make sure extra costs are covered. The new HST will be replacing the provincial sales tax of 8% and the GST of 5% with a new HST of 13% in Ontario and 12% in British Columbia.

The items that will be added to the new HST list will include gas prices, gym memberships, alcohol and cigarettes, home renovations and fishing and hunting licenses. Ontario residents can expect to pay higher cost for energy including natural gas, heating oil and electricity and Nova Scotia residents will pay more for cable and phone services, along with restaurant prices.
