According to a report by MSNBC, a chupacabra that had been shot and killed in Kentucky was not a chupacabra at all; it was really a bald raccoon. Reported sightings of “Chupacrabra”, which means “goat sucker” in Spanish have been reported over the past two decades. The animal apparently sucks the blood out of livestock and attacks them. Wildlife biologist Steven Dobey told MSNBC that the animal is definitely a hideous creature, but that the features found on the dead animal made it easy to identify it. Dobey said that there was no doubt that the dead animal was a raccoon.
Researchers at the University of Michigan said that there have been many alleged sightings of chupacabras several months ago, but that the animals were really mangy coyotes. The coyotes apparently lost their fur due to an epidemic of scabies. The raccoon did not lose it’s fur due to scabies, but lost it to another skin disorder that is very similar to o alopecia, which is found in humans. According to Dobey, the raccoon may have lost its fur due to trauma, shock, a viral infection, or a genetic defect.
