Video purportedly showing a woolly mammoth roaming the Russian wilderness has created a stir among believers and skeptics on the Internet.
The video shows a large, four-legged, apparently furry animal trudging through a river in Siberia’s Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region.
Michael Cohen, 41, a government engineer, made the film while surveying for a road in the summer of 2011. The Sun, a British newspaper, first reported about the possible woolly mammoth sighting on Feb. 8, 2012.
Cohen told The Sun that hair samples from the animal match those of woolly mammoth remains found in Siberia’s permafrost.
Some skeptical viewers, though, say the video is a hoax or speculate that it shows an elephant lost in Siberia or a bear catching a fish from the river.
Cohen, who writes about the paranormal, says that Siberia is a hot spot for possible sightings of woolly mammoths.
Woolly mammoths flourished during the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. A herd on Siberia’s Wrangel Island went extinct about 3,500 years ago.
