It sounds like a character from a children’s story book, not something to hit the news; however, this purple squirrel is real and definitely noteworthy!
According to a couple from Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, they caught a purple squirrel last Sunday. Percy Emert decided to set a trap with several peanuts as bait after his wife claimed to have seen the oddly-colored squirrel in their backyard. Sure enough, the unique animal was captured. After taking plenty of pictures to post online and collecting some fur samples, the Emerts decided to let the squirrel back into the wild.
While animals can come in unique colors, the obviously purple fur has officials confused. Henry Kacprzyk from a nearby zoo, suggested that the animal could have had its color changed by something such a pokeberries; however, they are not in season at this time. Hacprzyk jokingly suggested that maybe the animal fell into a portable toilet full of blue coloration.
Whatever the case, the purple squirrel is certainly gaining plenty of attention and now has its own Facebook page and Twitter account. Percy and Connie Emert don’t expect it to show up at their home again; however, they are anxious to see if anyone else spots their strange-colored friend.

That is awsome never seen one in my life!!!!!!!!!
You know some idiot just sprayed that purple hair dye you used as part of a halloween costume when you were a kid all over that poor helpless squirrel. It’s that or some squirrel watcher just learned how to use photoshop. Moral of the story: don’t believe everything you see or hear
Not necessarily, Squirrelzzzzzrcool. While the fact is someone COULD have sprayed the hapless creature with hair dye, it’s not impossible that the squirrel is a bizarre color morph caused by mutated pigment genes. It’s more likely that it got into ink or dye, but never rule out a possibility just for it’s unlikeliness.
