Colony of Bees Grounds Delta Flight

Air travelers today expect delays, but here is something new.

A Pittsburgh to New York flight was delayed after more than 10,000 bees swarmed one of the plane’s wings.

According to Delta Air Lines, it took more than 40 minutes for ground crews and a beekeeper to clear the colony.

“They were getting ready to fuel and they came around the corner of the plane and right there on the wing is a cluster of honeybees,” Master beekeeper Stephen Repasky of Meadow Sweet Apiaries said. “It was a shocker to a lot of people.”

Experts are baffled as to why the bees were attracted to the aircraft.

However, this isn’t the first time the Pittsburgh airport has dealt with a swarm of bees. In fact, it is the fourth time this year they have had to call in an expert to deal with the issue, but even they are quick to note it is unusual for bees to target airplanes.

“At the airport, this would be the fourth swarm that we’ve caught this year out there,” he said.
