Victorville, California – Vanessa Cervantez is now a mother of three children and certainly no stranger when it comes to delivering plus-sized infants. Her first two children tipped hospital scales at 10 lbs. and 9 lbs. 14 oz. respectively. However, the petite 5’1″ woman wasn’t expecting to set a national record when she underwent a C-section this past Thursday, January 16, at Desert Valley Hospital.
However, Mrs. Cervantez did just that with her baby Andrew Jacob Cervantez who weighed in at 15 lbs. 2 oz. In fact, she said that hospital staff had to measure the baby twice to believe their eyes. What’s all the more incredible is that the baby wasn’t full term yet. Little Andrew was delivered by emergency C-section after doctors became concerned about what they termed was “decreased fetal activity”. He was born 38 weeks into the pregnancy. Had he remained in the womb a little longer, he would certainly have added to his record breaking weight.
Prior to his birth, the largest baby on record in the United States was born to a Utah woman just last year at 14 lbs. However, Mrs. Cervantez won’t be entering the Guinness World Records with Andrew. While he is America’s biggest baby, he fell far short of the record set in 1879 by Canadian Ann Bates who weighed in at 23 lbs. 12 ounces.
The heaviest baby born to a healthy mother was a boy weighing 10.2 kg (22 lb 8 oz) who was born to Sig. Carmelina Fedele (Italy) at Aversa, Italy in September 1955.
