New Dating Website Allows Premium Users to Filter Prospective Dates by Size

The website OkCupid.com is free to users, but the site offers premium levels for subscription fees of $4.95 to $10 per month. Why would a person want to pay to find prospective dates? Because the premium levels allow users to filter out people based on their body size. Alternatively, users may filter only those size they are interested in dating.

For example, men and women alike may choose to make “tossers” of the fatties or if that’s your preference, your searches are narrowed down to the corpulent. The body size choices are meant to be descriptive such as “full figured” and “overweight”. There is even a choice of “used up” for those who like men or women whose bodies are weathered.

Some people are not amused by the body-size filtering option and are critical claiming that it amounts to discrimination. Duh! Isn’t that kind of the point when anyone selects someone to date based on what they find attractive? At any rate, one user said that it may make someone feel insecure if they label themselves by categories such as “overweight”.

“How you self-identify on the site, and how you’re going to be perceived on your date by your date, is going to be a point of potential insecurity,” one OkCupid user, Alana Massey, 28, told ABC News.

However, site co-founder Sam Yagan said the filter option is, well, just an option.

“The idea that it is somehow pejorative I think just doesn’t hold water, just by the fact that people are choosing to self-identify that way,” he told ABC. “I think it is an obvious feature of a dating site.”

Truth be told, if someone is insecure about being overweight, it isn’t the label that is making them feel out of sorts.

Popular dating site eHarmony said it has no plans to offer a similar screening tool.

“Our service is all about the end game, which is getting people into happy marriages or really happy long-term relationships and not just thinking about the superficial ‘I need to get a date for tonight,’” said Arvind Mishra, the site’s vice president of product management.
