Basketball legend Julius Erving, known to fans worldwide as “Dr. J”, has been ordered to pay Georgia National Bank more than $230,000 after failing to respond to a lawsuit claiming he defaulted on a million dollar loan.
The NBA legend received the original loan in 2009 for $1,000,000 and according to bank records, failed to repay a little more than $210,000 of it. When Georgia National Bank filed a lawsuit to reclaim the balance of the money owed, Erving did not respond to their demands.
Now a court in Georgia has ordered the 61-year-old sports star, who runs The Erving Group Corporation in Atlanta, to repay not only the $210,000 balance owed on the 2009 loan, but also $19,581.15 in interest. Erving was one of the first players in the American Basketball Association before it merged with the National Basketball Association and ranks as the fifth highest scorer in the game’s history.
