Participant On ABC’s Reality Series “Wipeout” Dies

According to media reports Friday, Tom Sparks, a former participant on ABC’s reality series Wipeout, has died.

Sparks, 33, had a fatal stroke in Los Angeles and passed away Nov. 5, says EW.com.

According to a statement released by his father, Bill Sparks, Tom had a rare pre-existing medical condition that may have caused blood clotting.

The California native appeared in a taping of the obstacle course game show on Oct. 19, and a spokesperson for production company Endemol confirmed that Tom was running the first segment of the course when he complained of knee pain.

Tom stayed upbeat, though, and gave an interview with the show’s host. Nonetheless, producers pulled him from the game. When medics arrived, they found that Tom had shortness of breath and rushed him to a hospital.

Endemol, which requires contestants to have medical exams before participating, found out about Tom’s death via his father’s posting on a social networking site.

Though extensive, those exams would not necessarily reveal pre-existing conditions.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family,” a joint ABC/Endemol statement read. “This is a tragic loss and our thoughts are with them at this time.”

Tom was a former disc jockey in Idaho and reportedly ran a marathon before appearing on Wipeout.
