Chaz Bono Talks Sex Change With GMA

Speaking to Good Morning America, Chaz Bono, the son of singer Cher, talked about his recent sex change.

Bono said: “The first hurdle was that I wasn’t going to be able to do this privately, like most people can.”

But he added that he was pleased to show to other trans people that he knew he’d made the right decision.

Bono explained the hardships of undergoing a sexual “transformation” and the “journey into manhood” to an extraordinarily sympathetic Chris Cuomo, saying, “Gender is between your ears, not between your legs.”

“A lot of female-to-male transgender people end up doing a stint in the lesbian community because it just kind of makes sense,” said  Bono, “At 13, 14, I was real clear at that point that I was attracted to women. So I was like, ‘I’m attracted to women, I am a woman, I guess I’m a lesbian.’ … That’s the simple answer.”

The 40-year-old writer, activist and reality-TV star says beginning the sex-change process to turn him from a woman to a man is “the best decision I’ve ever made.”

His mother Cher, who initially reacted negatively when Bono first came out, said: “I do not understand but I will strive to be understanding.”
