Designer Irina Shabayeva is this seasons winner of the fashion design competition Project Runway.
The 27-year-old New York City based designer took home top honors on Thursday’s sixth season finale of Runway, praised for her “cohesive” and “modern” Fashion Week collection.
Shabayeva, who beat out finalists Althea Harper and Carol Hannah Whitfield, both 24, for this season’s title, was initially criticized for sending a collection of black and gray-colored items down the runway.
“I can’t believe it!” the newest Project Runway winner exclaimed, jumping into consultant Tim Gunn’s arms as he walked out to congratulate her at the end.
“I’m definitely proud of myself,” she said, giving props to her opponents. “I think this deserves a pat on the back, because I had some stiff competition.”
Shabayeva won $100,000 and a spread in Marie Claire and a Paris vacation.

What I don’t understand is why she won when she did everything against what had been taught throughout the competition. Her collection was “costumey”, no color, and sorry, but we have seen ALL of those pieces in the Mad Max movies already! And since when are clothes supposed to be “armor”? The saying goes, the woman wears the clothes, don’t let the clothes wear you. Clothes are supposed to inspire confidence, not be a mask. Carol Hannah undoubtedly should have won that competition, with Althea coming in a real close second.Both are wonderful designers. I feel quite ripped off after watching all these weeks.
True, I think she’s hot, but personal looks aside, the right designer won. Her creations were tight and stylish with the right amount of edge. Congratulations, Irina.
She deserved to win. She was a bitch as are most professional women are considered when they are serious about their craft. It doesn’t matter if she put her collection in ALL black, it’s the design that really matters. I agree that her competition was fierce, especially Althea. She deserved to win, but the other two girls will be out with a line of clothing soon just wait and see.
I totally agree Carol Hannah was my favorite, I would wear something she designed.
No! I’m surprised after Irina accused others of copying her designs, rolling her eyes when Althea was very kind in her explanation of similar designs, and going against Nina AND Michael’s suggestion with an ‘ALL BLACK’ line. She is rude, selfish and a bitch, and her clothes are too specific for only one type of person. Althea had a great mix n’ match group, and Carol Hannah’s was fun and unique. Absolutely loved Carol Hannah’s first outfit!! WOW! I guess it’s because Irena is ‘one of them’. That’s okay Althea and Carol Hannah, you don’t want to live that lifestyle anyway. You are both way too awesome!!!
I think Carol Hannah should have one. She had more variety to her collection that I think women would actually wear. If you are a warrior, or something, you may wear Irina’s mostly black, boring, silly “armor” hat collection. Really, who would wear those clothes in public. Too costumey.
Carol Hannah’s collection was by far the best. The judges said her’s didn’t connect enough. At least it wasn’t the same old black outfit coming down the runway. Carol Hannah’s was interesting, captivating, and most of all, since it was clothes, wearable! Great job Carol Hannah!
Honestly, Of course she should ahve won, she was head and shoulders above the rest all season and was the only who actually made a “collection”. So she is a bitch, that doesn’t disqualify her. She was by far the best designer of the season. Congrats Irina
No more. I will not watch this show. They just keep people like Irina on teh show for publicity. Everyone knows she should’t of won especially after they say “Dont use ALL BLACK” and she does her own thing which is fine, but by far the other two girls were more talented and I would of wore what the other girls made. Project Runway played into her game and I will bet money she will dump on Project Runway cause she has no respect for Heidi or judges. She has no morals or ethics. I no longer respect the show myself and I am through with watching it. This is twice I feel it was very I don’t care that she was a bitch, but honestly I think Heidi and the judges have forgotten what this show started out to be.

Carol Hannah and Althea were tough competition. But I could see this coming weeks ago. The producers wanted an imigrant to win the american dream. This time it had nothing to do with talent because they tossed out some of the best early in the season. Congradulations but Irena you were not the best .
Irina won more challenges than anyone else and was a consummate designer and seamstress. Her looks were always fresh, well sewn and the favorites of the judges. Oh, well, she’s a “bitch”. Grow up already! I get tired of hearing all of the immature, cutie-pie details of everyone’s lives. I want to see tough, fierce competition and a winner who owns the stage with styles, accessories, great hair, hats and make-up. I want to see a final show that is big, bold and shows continuity. The other gals were good, but Irina was great. I can’t wait to be able to buy one of her styles!
I feel that Carol Hannah’s line was more fashion forward and imaginative that Irina’s, I mean really all black? wow no one ever wears black…yawn..
My choice after seeing the collections was Carol Hannah. But after hearing the critiques of the judges
I felt they were leaning toward Irina at the same time
the editing of their thoughts continued the suspense.
They are all winners and do beautiful work.
