Sen Lugar’s Wife Arrested for DUI

According to reports, Charlene S Lugar, 72, was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) and a hit-and-run. Ms Lugar is the wife of Senator Richard G Lugar (R Representative for Indiana).

Charlene Lugar was arrested on Wednesday night in McLean, Fairfax County. A police man saw smoke emitting from her car and that it had front end damage.

It was determined Lugar had hit a stationary car in McLean. Lugar was given a breathalyzer test and arrested. After she was brought to jail and processed, she was released.

Sen. Lugar issued a statement, saying: “At about 6:30 p.m. last evening, November 18, Mrs. Lugar had a traffic accident in our McLean, Virginia neighborhood. A charge has been filed and a court appearance is scheduled for January. No other persons were in her car or the unattended car she hit. Thankfully, no one was injured. We are deeply sorry and embarrassed that this accident has occurred.”

A trial is scheduled for Jan. 8 in Fairfax County General District Court.

  1. James Burton says:

Although I feel sad for the Senator for him and his family, I had to ask if she was released right away because she was the Senaroes wife or if that is the law in Virginia?

    • colt says:

      why do you care

    • Stu Pidasso says:

what a scum bag. another gop’r showing that they are the moral majority. more like the immoral minority

    • MRamos says:

She was released because she was the Senator’s wife. Special privileges that regular citizens do not have.

      • Seno says:

She was released because that is what happens to anyone. I know I was stupid enough to get a DUI.

        • Scooby says:

Seno…u r wrong…maybe n the state u live n u r released rite away but VA has MUCH stricter laws u r not released like that

      • Lucy says:

You said it correctly. What I do not understand is why didn’t she take a taxi or call someone to pick her up, if your drunk YOU DO NOT DRIVE. Another Rich dysfunctional idiot. The law should apply to all, I am really fed up with wealthy pple (especially people who are connected to politics) who THINK THEY ARE ABOVE THE LAW. Her license should be suspended and she should have to do community service and attend AAA meetings.

      • once again says:

you are so right about that

    • D Martin says:

It stays she was brought to jail, processed and released. Where does it say “Released right away”. Don’t change the story please. That’s the process for every citizen.

  2. Mike Hicks says:

He cares because if it had been you or me we would have had to stay in a cell until the attorney arrived!!!

    • Jason says:

      Mike,

It depends on the state you live in.

    • Richard says:

      simply not true…

    • once again says:

what’s up with D Martin he must be one of the Special privilege one’s lol being released that same night or day is not the process for every citizen, There are other factors that may come into play. And dont be from out of town or out of state and get stop for a DUI or DWI because you can bet your sweet butt that you are going to have a nice stay over night in jail.

  3. Ken says:

I’d be curious to know why she was ‘released’ as well – an ordinary citizen would have been put in jail, allowed to contact an attorney or relative to come and post bail before we would be released. Yet more of the ’special treatment’ for the Washington elite. They are no different – they should be treated the same as the rest of us, but because they are politically connected, nothing is done.

I’m sure her case will just get a dismissal and won’t require any community service or jail time; just pay a $50 fine and be told “don’t do it again”. It won’t be reported on her insurance or affect her premiums. And if it happens again, chances are very high that someone else will be involved in the accident and be injured, because our judicial system failed, once again.

    • D Martin says:

Ken, Again, chill out! No one does the jail time before the court date. You do the jail time AFTER you have been convicted. Everyone gets released after they have been processed. What the story does not state is she has a Jan court date, after which she will serve a manatory 5 day jail time as Virginia laws states. C hill out and quit screaming like a little kid.

    • Lilly says:

What makes you think her attorney didn’t arrive, bail was not posted, etc.

These things happen in the best and worse families.

Where is the compassion? But by the grace of God go I or you, or you, or you …

    • EarL Rhodes says:

if it is there 1st offense they come before a juge 24 hrs 7 days a week the are release to someone that they will not drive again at than time they are given instructions what they can and can not do this applys to ever one she was wrong she will suffer why pick on rich or Senators wife they are treated the same I was a Judge for 34 year lets be fair to all not because who or what they are

    • once again says:

Don’t you know that Senator Richard G Lugar knows the Judge all it took was one phone call.

  4. mike says:

Most states have a release toa responsbile third party its unfortunate that this happened and it does not make the Senator any less a dirt bag than he already is

  5. liberty justice says:

Big deal! So what if she’s a drunk, she’s a good Christian and she’s the wife of the fine drunkard Republican Senator from Indiana. The people she could’ve killed, probably deserved to die anyway.

    • Stu Pidasso says:

Liberty – the GOP have no morals. Even the old farts go around driving drunk and performing hit and run excercises. trash

    • once again says:

Very well could have been someone in your family maybe you baby girl your wife your mother or how about if it was yout new born. you should think before you open your mouth.

  6. Melvin Holt says:

In some states if there’s someone that can take charge of you and see that you remain safe and off the street for eight hours minimum, some police districts will release a DUI arrestee into the custody of a responsible person such as a parent, husband, significant other, or relative. I don’t know about Virginia.

  7. woodbutcher says:

If this had been a Democrat senator’s wife you wouldn’t even know about it, unless you are enlightened enough to watch Fox news.

    • Crit says:

Fox news enlightened? The way they were outraged at President Obama bowing to the Japanese emperor? The way that they quietly moved on and dropped it after many pictures of ALL former presidents were taken while bowing to some other dignitary?

Fox news is only “enlightened” on subjects that will excite its viewers or that it thinks will.

Political party makes no differnce to MAD or any of the real new agencies. A political figures wife getting a DUI is news.

      • MdMax1 says:

Well Crit, youve shown yourself to be the wild eyed liberal you are. Your kind are systematiclly terring down our nation. If Fox is biased it’s the only news media not biased to the left. One out of four aint bad. One other thing, they are the number one cable news service and closing in oon the networks so more than your sick ilk are watching them
As for the drunk business, in this state one is either held untill sober or released to some one that is. THEN the bail is set. Not untill a hearing is held to determine if one did commit a crme.

      • Richard says:

        Crit,
Your bias is showing. I watch a lot of news; Fox actually has some journalistic integrity. Unlike most of the current news media injecting their version of reality into every report.

        I know this matters to you;

Don’t care that Oprah is quitting sort of, maybe in 2011

Doesn’t matter that Obama ran on a platform of change and has changed nothing unless you count tripling the deficit as something

Oh and, please, nevermind the fact that our people are dying in Afghanistan and our president won’t get off of the fence even months later.

Believe what you want. Vote the way your union tells you. And die young under government controlled healthcare.

Because as contrived as all of this is, it’s still natural selection at it’s finest

    • Richard says:

Amen! That is the part that the “sheeple” are not getting.

  8. janet says:

Wow, I really hope you are kidding…

    • Barbara says:

No, she isn’t. Have you seen the video clip on u-tube of the Russian dignitaries ignoring Obama’s outstreatched hand in a reception line?

  9. knockmoose says:

why does it matter if she was a democrat or a republican the lady needs help if she has a drinking problem at 72 and i am sure no favirite treatmemt was given cause that law agenty would or will be checked out

    • John says:

Of course she has a drinking problem, she’s married to a Republican senator who is worthless as a senator. That would drive anyone to drink, and make them drive drunk.

    • JBS says:

      agreed 100% knockmoose

    • once again says:

The woman has a drinking problem because she knows what really gos on in Washington D.C. with all of the
democrat and republican she knows about all their dirt that they do. So she has to drink I would also if I was her.lol

  10. dredknot says:

Quote: “Big deal! So what if she’s a drunk, she’s a good Christian and she’s the wife of the fine drunkard Republican Senator from Indiana. The people she could’ve killed, probably deserved to die anyway.”

ok, being a drunk makes you a bad christian. on a different note though, i was called at about 3:30 am to come pick up my friend at the jail house who was arrested for dui. no bail or anything. I just had to promise to take care of him til he sobered up.

  11. Gordon Saskin MD says:

Richard Lugar a dirt bag drunkard??? R U kidding? The man is a genius and a really excellent, refined gentleman. None of you are qualified to polish his shoes.

  12. James says:

Our judicial system “failed” just once again!

We should take a look at: Singapore judicial system where you are “canned” in public regardless of social status

    • Richard says:

You are “canned” when you are fired or placed in a metal cylinder. When you are “caned” the bottoms of your feet are struck with cane.

  13. julia says:

This is a sad case. This woman is not a christan. This is satan work.As a christian for fifty-three years, and never drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, did any kind ofhard drugs, lied, hate anyone I have truly been blessed by god because I honor his commandments. When we worship money and so call power we will fall in satan trap.

    • Lilly says:

Many Christians fall into Satan’s trap. This has nothing to do with politics, religion, race, status, etc. Is everyone on this site perfect? As Jesus said “Let he (or she) who is without sin cast the first stone.” I certainly do not fit that criteria, do you?

  14. jim says:

if i was married to a republican i would probably be a drunk also

    • Lilly says:

How do you know that she is a drunk? Because she was arrested? How many times have you had a drink or two at a function and drove home? How many times have you been stopped? Maybe she had one drink and was taking medication that made it more potent to her? Please …

    • lARRY says:

If you was married to a Republican at least one in the family would have some common sense. You ask for it.

  15. laurel says:

getting a DUI costs thousands of dollars and treatment yet it is likely that she will get off free because she is an “elite.” Doesnt matter what flipping party her senator husband belongs to either of what faith she ‘professes’ — as if Liberty Justice had a clue.

  16. karen says:

but if she did get hurt im sure she has insurance to cover the outrageous emergancy bill that would have incurred…..

  17. captain says:

i doubt if her being a republican or democrat was on her drivers test or on the warning label of whatever alcoholic beverage she was drinking. And who watch FoxNews besides old bitter people who hate change.

    • Lilly says:

I hope your ready to live with the change that is being proposed. Let’s see how you feel this time next year. Oh, I am not a republican … I am a citizen that reads, listens and watches as much as possible to come to my own conclusions. I don’t need others to do my thinking for me. You may want to think about doing the same.

    • Richard says:

It wasn’t the appropriate, socially acceptable bow…it was the grovelling dog posture.

You can take the man out of the country but you can’t take, wait what country is this bastard child from?

  18. GarDob says:

The large share of people commenting, really take a long stare in the Bathroom mirror!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Amy U says:

Everything gets framed in a political prizm in Washington!!!!

  20. Mark says:

The woman made a mistake in drinking and then driving. The main problem with alcohol is that it alters your judgement, thus she left the scene of the accident. That is one of the reasons why drinking and driving is a bad idea. She received no special treatment in being released to a third party. That is common in cases like this. I made a similar mistake and was treated the same as the report says she was. My charges were also dismissed, another common practice in many states for first offenders. I am not a Senator nor am I related to any Senators.

The comments about spending the night in jail are based on no understanding of the law or real law enforcement practices but on what happens in movies and television.

I am saddened by the level of ignorance, envy, and anger many of the previous posters demonstrate in their comments. It does not bode well for thr future of our society.

  21. Roberto says:

I think it is awesome that she is 72, drunk at 6pm and out on a booze run! Viva la Lugar’s!

  22. Nathan says:

Throw the book at her, she has to be an habitual offender is she is still drunk driving at 72, I learned my lesson in my twenties. I say give her a “mandatory minimum” sentence and make her do her time with the the “lower class” criminals, orange jumpsuit and all.

  23. Jason says:

Why does the left always think that because its republican she will get away free and clear? Wasnt John Kerry’s daughter just arrested for the same thing in LA? Getting out on bail is just making sure that you show up for court, Im sure the Senators wife will show up! Let it go!!!

  24. julius O says:

What is bad is bad. Republican or Democrat; this is shameful. If you want to get drunk and don’t want to do it in your house; get a designated driver. A US sanator’s wife should have enough money to hire a chauffeur. We are still paying for this – tax-payers.

  25. MRamos says:

She was released because she was the Senator’s wife. Special privileges that regular citizens do not have.

  26. Sam Sanford says:

My husband was arested on a DUI and they released him immediately. Standard procedure is someone is willing to pick the drunk up. I should have left him there.

  27. SusieQ says:

Hopefully if I go to Heaven I’ll be sure to tell my dead 3 year old son how people who drink too much are not responsible for what they do. Of course the woman that killed him was sober when she took the first drink, no one help a gun to her head to drink, no on threatened her life to drink, no one threatened to rape her if she didn’t drink. Hmmm, I guess my baby deserved to die in order for the woman to get help. She’s now sober and having a wonderful life. I however go through hell every Christmas day(the day he died)then go through it again on New Year’s Day his birthday. I hope the woman that killed my son dies a horrible, horrible death just like my son. I have no pity for drunk drivers. They deserve the death penalty. Driving a car drunk is like pointing a loaded gun at someone. I’ll use my pity and prayers for people who truly deserve them.

    • Lilly says:

I am so sorry for your loss and you are right it is never acceptable to drink and drive; however, it still happens no matter what we think or do. Although I believe it happens less often than in the past. I too would have a hard time forgiving someone who took the life of my precious child. Although the woman may appear to have a “good life” I doubt that is the case. She has to live every day of her life knowing that she is responsible for the death of a baby … and no matter what she says or does this will never change. I pray that in time you will allow the Lord to help you forgive her … for your sake.

    • Larry says:

The Bible says, If you can”t forgive others how can you expect GOD to forgive you?

  28. Alan Anapolsky says:

    Republican rhetoric leads to drinking!!

  29. Jerianne says:

Each state have different processing requirements. You are released once someone arranges bail.Give her some compassion, we all have our problems no matter who you are.It didn’t say how drun she was. She may not be used to drinking and she is older so she may have the alcohol react quicker and drink only a small amount. What’s your problem? Get a life!

  30. Lesa G says:

The “issue” is not which party you belong to folks “DRUNKS” can be found in both political parties. Let’s not forget “Ted Kennedy” who “got away” with “killing a young woman” while drunk, who was a “drunk for many years”. This real issue is “DRUNKS KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE”!!!!! Just ask “Mary Joe’s” parents!!!!

  31. joe says:

I can understand her being released on dui if it’s the state law, but it seems there should have been a bond hearing because of the HIT and RUn. That sis a criminal offense that should require a bond hearing, as it is property damage to another. That is the part that shows eliteism inm opinion. As far as her being a dem, or repub, . TYhey ar eall crooked and worthless. It is clearly time for the independant party to come foreward with an electable candidate and energize their base . NOW IS THE TIME FOR THE INDEPENDANT PARTY TO RISE !!!!!!!

  32. Mark says:

What is wrong with you people and your lynch-mob mentality? The lady is 72 years old! That gives us the responsibility to handle her humanely and gently. Old people drink… They sometimes make the same mistakes us younger folks do. Let her pay her fine the same as everyone else. She’s already been publicly humiliated along with her husband. Isn’t that enough for you bloodthirsty few. Its a bipartisan issue. Politics have nothing to do with it. It was a humiliating mistake made by a respectable older citizen. It happens all the time!

  33. Sandra says:

Well you can bet that there won’t be any enormous punishment here because she is a Senator’s Wife. If she gets punished at all it will be a little slap on the wrist. However, if it were me or you we would be thrown under the jail.

  34. Joe says:

I is tnteresting to view the comments. The liberal voices, I presume Democrats don’t look at their own side of the aisle. I know a lot of Democrats and Republican and most of the Democrats in politics are quiet heavy on the “juice”. Many of the Washington bunch, I could name names, are as well. Perhaps to deaden their conscience over the horrible legislation they are pushing upon us.

  35. gajfo says:

Hey Stu Pidasso sounds to me like you’re a democrat so you should know exactly what is immoral like you’re lying president Clinton, your support of gay rights and homosexuality, your support of abortion and so on and so forth and I bet you talk on your cell phone when you’re driving which most of the time is worse than driving after drinking. As long as no one got hurt or killed who cares. It’s people who think like you that is taking this country right down the toilet. Happy Thankgsgiving you putz !!

  36. Bob says:

WOW.. I never realized that there were so many idiots that post to these stories. Once arrested, charges do not disappear anymore.

  37. Corey says:

Whether or not you are released ROR (Released on your own Recognizance) in Virginia depends on your prior criminal record, your ties to the community, and other factors…..Basically, your likelihood to show up for your court appearance. A 72 year old woman, with a local address, charged with a misdemeanor traffic offense, who’s polite and cooperative with the arresting officer, with no recent convictions or pending cases would be released after processing in McLean, VA. And Virginia is pretty serious about DWI’s. She was treated no differently than anyone else would be, UNDER THE SAME CIRCUMSTANCES. She has been CHARGED, not convicted. Even if she weren’t married to a US senator, she is not really the ‘fugitive’ type. Fairfax is a rich county, but believe me, if they don’t HAVE to keep you in their jail, they don’t want you taking up space. I know…….I have been arrested for DWI and processed at the Fairfax County jail. Not bad, as jails go either.

This lady got drunk and hit a parked car. Period. Whether or not she’s a Democrat or Republican is sooo irrelevant. And BTW: None of you even know how she really votes. My mother is as rabid a republican as they come and my dad is a liberal democrat. You never really know.

If she is convicted in VA she will not just walk away from this. However, I’m sure that she will have a very expensive, and very GOOD, attorney. If there is anything remotely questionable about this it is the simple fact that really good legal reperesentation costs more than a court-appointed attorney, who BTW, is not free. Don’t hate this lady, thank her. It’s people like her who don’t really cost the county anything, and can afford to pay a significant fine and God knows how many other little BS fees, who really support the judicial system in this country. Drive around McLean sometime……This type of defendant is not really that unfamiliar to law enforcement there. The fact that she’s a senator’s wife is not going to impress them all that much.

  38. gajfo says:

Corey, you’re correct but comments by people like that just rile me (and many other people) up. They blame the GOP for everything. Like that dog just pooped on the sidewalk and it’s master didn’t pick it up, must be a Republican, they have no concern for the environment. If its master was a Democrat maybe they’d pick it up and eat it and the sidewalk would be nice and clean. Right!!

  39. SueM60CO says:

It’s amazing that somehow ths became a Democrat vs. Republic thing. Don’t forget the King of Drunk Driving, the late, great (now that he’s dead) Democrat Ted Kennedy. He got away with killing some one while he was driving drunk. Stuff like that is what makes people of privilege think the laws don’t apply to them.

  40. When you vote for a SFN says:

You Amerikans are too stupid to remain independent any more. Giood riddance to all the greedy, self centered Amerikans whose government is now run by a cadre of criminals under the direction of that SFN Bambi who should be ‘blown’ out of office along with all the Criminal Czars. Bye Bye AmeriKa. :-) LOL

  41. dee says:

This SHOULD have nothing to do with what party you are affiliated with! I love the United States, but I feel like there are too many whiners and too many people who get pissed off if life is not handed to them on a silver f-ing platter. (I am a teacher and work two jobs just to make ends meet, so when I see someone doing NOTHING…I have NO sympathy!) I am not siding one way or the other because I don’t have all of the info. The American public is way too quick to jump to conclusions…one way or another. Just shut the f up and wait to find out what really happened.

    • once again says:

dee { laughing } I hope my kid don’t see and read your post. But I feel what you are saying. Iam a Electrician full time M-F also a Musician on Sundays I do electrical work on the side on Sat and still looking for a part time job for Sat nights.

  42. Get it right, this is still a man's world says:

    Dear Lesa G,
You are correct, this has nothing to do with a specific political party. What it has to do with is being the neglected wife of a “very important man”. She will pay for this dearly. Not only will she be punished as a typical first time DIU arestee, (probation}, she will be be punished for her inability to be a perfect Senator’s wife.

  43. Tommy P. says:

It is interesting to me to see how many people label Sen. Lugar as a right wing politico and condemn him based solely on the party he is in. If anything, he has proved himself to be a moderate (voted against the national gun carry permit bill) and is responsible for the agreement with the Russians on Nuclear disarmament. I am confident that Mrs. Lugar will be sentenced for the crime committed and should not get any “special” treatment. If she does, us Hoosiers will have a chance to address it at the polls.

  44. firebrand says:

when all the hoopla is over, mrs. lugar will have learned a very valuable lesson. the police can be guardin angels as they are in this matter. not only for mrs. lugar but also for the rest of the motorist on her route as well.
