Twilight New Moon scared off the opposition with the third biggest opening weekend in movie history.

Staring Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart, The Twilight Saga: New Moon took a whopping US$140.7 million in ticket sales in its opening weekend. That puts New Moon behind only The Dark Knight, which took US$158 million, and Spider-Man 3, which took US$151 million.

The movie, which is based on the romance between high school student Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, and vampire Edward Cullen, played by Pattinson, took US$70 million on its opening day.
