Did Dancing With The Stars Pick The Right Winner?

Donny Osmond won season 9 of Dancing With the Stars, beating Mya, the heavy favourite.

“I’m so happy. I’m so happy. I’m so happy right now! I’m on cloud nine!” an energetic Osmond said after winning the competition.

In a upset of epic proportions, the fan favorite beat out the dancer with considerably more talent.  Sure, Mya had the skills, the talent, the 10s, but Donny was definitely the season’s crowd-pleaser, so when you think about it that way, it really shouldn’t have been super-shocking that Donny took home the mirror ball trophy.

He joins winners including Kelly Monaco, Brooke Burke, and last season’s 1st place Shawn Johnson.

Mya, understandably was disappointed.

“There’s so much. There’s disappointment, dedication, passion and commitment… I’ve learned multiple amount of things. It’s an experience that you’ll never forget for the rest of your life and that you want to share with others,” Mya said after hearing the results.

Kelly Osbourne was also very grateful.

“I’m just so happy to have made it to the finals,” she said. Kelly.

The two-hour live broadcast from Hollywood featured performances by Whitney Houston and many DWTS alumni.

Do you think the right contestant won?

My husband and I were thoroughly disappointed in your selection of Osmond. My God, did the judges not say he screwed up royally on several dances. In my opinion, the judges have no credibility anymore. If it is a popularity contest then you’re missing the point. I thought the judges should in the end have a 65% vote but then last nite you voted for Osmond??????? What the heck was that all about???? Kelly, at least had no formal training and she proved to be really entertaining. It seemed like the judges were being paid off to vote for Osmond. Osmond, the whinny little kid who kept saying he wanted to be in the finals (even though he sucked). He should be ashamed of himself. I and a lot of other people will not watch this show any longer.

Season after season we see that this show is a fan driven popularity event not a dancing talent contest. Mya was the only contestant of the 3 that merited a place in the final. Several that were eliminated in previous weeks deserved to be in the semi final and final with her. Voting needs to be done differently, the fans carry far too much voting sway

      Dear d.mcdonald,

I share the same feelings with you. I will never watch this show ever again. That was the only entertaining thing I found on TV now-a-days. I have to stick to gardening. This really sucked. Let’s boycut this show. Happy Holidays.

Oh grow up. It’s entertainment and Donny was/is a great entertainer. I’m sick of people coming on the show with dance experience and expecting to win. It’s all about Donny and Kelly. Two with no dance experience at all growing throughout the season. That’s the entertainment value…Not watching Mya dance perfectly all the time. If that’s what the show’s about then just have the professionals and dancer with experience only. That’s why Mario Lopez didn’t win. Get over it.

    • Merce says:

I feel so much like you do. I was sick last night. I do not trust viewers to choose true talent, but what I couldn’t believe was that the judges gave Osmond first place standing last night. They just finished saying Maya was the best dancer, that she had been consistent in her performance all the way from the start… She was consistent, she had the talent and did not make mistakes. Were the judges manipulated to get Osmond in despite his many mistakes? I love to see good dancing, but this makes me never wanting to watch it again. It does not have anything to do with excelence … but with popularity. And the judges should be above this.

Mya,by all means had the best scores, and was the best dancer.I thought this was a dancing contest, not a popularity contest. So it doesn’t matter how hard you work to be the best. It’s about who you are.Donnie Osmond, we grew up with him and is well known and liked. But he was by far, not the best dancer.

  3. Pat says:

Another unfair decision! This show needs to be revamped. Why bother to have professional judges if the viewers are going to determine the outcome? It gives an unfair advantage to well-known and popular contestants and spoils the show for those of us who care about the actual dancing. Joanna Krupp should never have been eliminated when she was. Natalie deserved better. Mya was clearly the best dancer. Very disappointing!

  4. kathy zikes says:

Yes, I think it was a good choice. Mya was a good dancer but she started out
that way. Yes, Donnie messed up as did all the others but he stuck with it and continued to improve and entertain and was really good at the finnish line. His
freestyle at the end was the Best.

    • db says:

Absolutely correct. It’s not about popularity, it’s about someone getting better and all the while entertaining. I also found some of Mya’s routines boring. Watching Donny and Kelly was fun and entertaining.

  5. A. Siverio says:

I don’t like to repeat what others are saying BUT Donnie Osmond should not have won. Just because he is more popular does not mean he is the best. The best was Mya and Kelly should have come in second place. My husband and I were both shocked at the outcome.

  6. Carol says:

It’s a shame that Dancing with the Stars has turned into a popularity contest instead of a dancing contest.

  7. Dell says:

Since the very first Dancing with the Stars, the judges have TRIED to force their choices on the public, aka, the trashy first winner from another ABC show that conveniently had a “wardrobe” malfunction. Remember the uproar over that and they finally had to give in and have a dance off between her and her unmemorable partner and John Hurley and Charlotta Jorgenson and the public voted them the actual winner by over 80% so they and the network gave up trying to rig the results. All of those complaining that Donnie and Kym shouldn’t have won – one question, did you vote? It seems according to those that actually voted, they picked who they liked best.

  8. Lisa says:

I am really sick to my stomach. I have watched every season of DWTS and this is the FIRST time that I’ve ever seen the finalists compete for scores during a results show. Scores have ALWAYS been calculated from the previous nights performance so I can’t imagine why it was different this time around. To add insult to injury, Donny’s first performance of the tango did not receive such high remarks so why why the judges felt he deserved a 30 this time around is beyond me. No couple has ever been judged on a previous routine in the history of this show and DWTS has lost all credibility in my opinion. I also think that Lens low scores for Mya this season were terribly inconsistent with the marks she received from the other judges and I can’t help but feel that there was something fishy going on here and I won’t be tuning in to DWTS anymore. I love ballroom dancing and Mya was my favorite because she is the best dancer (and I don’t care that she had a background in tap, a great many ballroom dancers in the ballroom circuit have a background in ballet or jazz or whatever so I don’t see how it makes any difference and for the judges to factor this into their scores makes no sense to me). Mya Donny may have the mirror ball trophy but that sure isn’t a testament to his dancing ability. You worked as hard as anyone else, if not harder and you were just amazing to watch and gracious to a fault. You were fantastic before DWTS and I can’t wait to see what spectacular feats you accomplish next.

  9. Marilyn says:

I agree with Willaim comment. I thought this was a dancing contest. I was very disappointed and surprised to see that Donny was selected as the winner. I think many people will stop watching DWTS because of this. Until it is judged as a dancing contest and not a popularity contest I am through with watching. I have watched every week and in my mind Mya is the winner. So Donny may have won the trophy but Mya has won the contest.

  10. sandy says:

I could not watch the last two weeks knowing that some of the best dancers were off the show. I knew that either Donny or Kelly were going to win and not because they were good dancers. I stopped watching many times because of the Sabrina vote off and stopped voting on-line. I felt like my votes were not being added and besides there is no proof that any of the votes are. It is like the show changed to make it their choice. Mya was the best dancer and the judges were horrible to her. I believe the show picks who they think will give it the best ratings. I never heard of Mya before and I guess the show felt, it could get more out of Donny win. Donny’s partner did most of the work. This is the way these popularity shows work and always will. If there is something else on, I will not bother to watch again.

  11. Collette says:

I was very disappointed in the results. Mya should have won. This show is not about dancing, clearly not.

  12. Judy says:

Donny was by far the best overall dancer – in every area. He “vested” himself in the show – participated heart and soul. Mya lacked most of the elements that make a dancer good — talent she had, yes – but commitment to a team, to the show and to the others on the show, no. Thank you for a REAL vote – a vote that counts — based on commitment and improvement, not on skill alone. Donny has it all – showmanship, commitment, heart and skill. I’m a greater fan than before.

  13. Tequila says:

I thought Mya was the best overall dancer. However, Donnie’s freestyle was entertaining and also good technically.

  14. Virginia Paez says:

From now on I will not watch Dancing with the Stars anymore, as this was not the first time it happens that they picked the wrong star, not deserving just for popularity just because all his relatives and friends are there in the show. he won! other deserving talents like Mario Lopez, Giles Marini last season also did not won because of this voting system and popularity contest. its not a dancing competition no more.. even if they tried hard to impressed the judges they still will not gonna win. its really UNFAIR with Mya she is the real winner and not DONNY… its really rubbish and not deserving to watch.. I’m sorry I and my husband together with all our friends in Canada were disappointed with the results and from now on WE WILL BOYCOTT WATCHING DANCING WITH THE STARS if they will not change this system… only ABC wins…in the end..

  15. Vic says:

Mya should have won. I will not watch DWTS anymore!

  16. Joe says:

I was very disappointed in the results. Mya should have won. This show is not about dancing. It has become a popularity constest. Mya was consistenly excellent. Donny and Kelly improved, but in the end Mya was still head and shoulders more exciting and skilled than either Donny or Kelly. Donny hamming it up and whining earned him the “shallow” victory!

    • Joe says:

The three finalist should have been Mya, Joanna, and Aaron Carter. The voters got one right and two wrong.

  17. tx dem says:

No,they did not pick the correct winner. I think it was a fix and unfair competition. For one thing he had been training and preparing for 2 yrs. The next thing ABC network gave him all the publicity on the Insider and Entertainment tonight everyday, it was just like they were campaigning for him. It was a conflict of interest. They should have given all the contestants the same amount of air time, but they did not. They did the same thing with Maria. Not one time did they interview Mya, or some of the other dancers. This was a prejudice and unfair advantage for the popular vote. He was the only person getting all the attention. The swimsuit model danced better than he did. All the Osmonds have are teeth and big heads. It was unfair and I will probably not look at it next season. I regret that I did not voice my concerns about this during the contest. They tried to be seem with the Jacksons so it would give them more publicity, I am truly unhappy about the turn out because Donny can not dance, he walked all during the last dance and got a perfect score. How do you figure that????

  18. AD says:

I 100% agree with d. donald. Mya clearly should have taken that trophy on last nights show. She deserved it, as she flawlessly delivered every week. I am disgusted. The same thing happened to Mel B a few seasons ago. The show should no longer be called DWTS if the show is about a popularity contest. The show misrepresents itself. I was extremely disappointed by their choice.

  19. Jan says:

I am so tired of Donny & Marie. I thought this a show to find the celebrity that turned out to be the best dancer NOT the Donny & Marie Show. Come on Mary Hart get a life. I an not sure I will ever watch the show again with So You Think YOu Can Dance and other shows that are not being used to some has beens benefit.

  20. Diamond says:

For all you Donny fans, yes he was very good. But not as good as Mya, to Db above, sit down and shut up.. Mya’s dance routine was anything but boring, what were you watching???, Just take a look at the majority of the comments here,,most people thought Mya should have won, hands down. And Donny does have professional experience also.

  21. Diane Zeck says:

Donny and Shawn…well done. You deserve it. Never mind the critics who speak against you. They weren’t the judges and really don’t understand what the criteria is to ace this program. Personally, I thought you both rocked…..the best.

  22. Chrissy says:

Donny Osmond should not have been a contestant in the first. He has always been a dancer in his concerts, tv shows and musical theater shows.
He has spent years working with choregraphers and dance rehearsals.
    He was not a novice.

  23. Shar says:

Very disappointing results. Maya was by far the best and most consistent dancer of the competition and should have won. The judges were also unfair with their remarks and scores. So many things wrong with this show which is why I will not waste my time to watch next season’s.

  24. DC says:

Mya should have been the winner base on talent. The results were not surprising, base on talent Donny Osmond would have been eliminated way back.
