I found the best way is to quit cold turkey.I think that the patches make you want a cig. The first 4 days are the worst, then it gets easier everyday. I smoked for 37 yrs.I have quit for 5 months now and dont even think about smoking anymore....Good Luck..

Dear John Mellencamp’s son:
I wish you all the luck in trying to get your father to quit smoking. Unfortunately, all of your efforts will be unsuccessful, if your father is not ready to quit. I mean really quit.
When I first saw your request for help on the internet, my first thought was to not do anything and forget it. The problem is that I could not forget that I tried to get my father to quit, too, when I was about your age. My twin brother and I thought that we could get him to stop smoking by taking a pack of his cigarettes, roll all of the tobacco out and replace it with dried corn silk. We even went as far as stuffing the ends of the cigarettes with real tobacco so that he would not notice. We assumed that, as soon as he started tasting the bad flavor of the corn silk, he would think that cigarettes no longer tasted good and he would just quit. We spent hours performing this task and, once we were finished, we snuck the pack back into the house. We both waited and watched him pick up the pack, pull out a cigarette, and light up. He took a few puffs, looked at the cigarette, looked at the pack, and then looked at us. He knew what we done but he did not say a word. He, simply, waded up the pack, threw it away, and pulled another pack out of the cigarette carton.
There were other times that we tried to get him to quit and were unsuccessful but this is the one that I remember the most.
My father was diagnosed with lung cancer years later. I was no longer a young kid. I was 37 years old when my father died. He lived with my family and we took care of him during his final years. Every morning, when I got ready to go to work, I would go into his bedroom to see if he was still breathing. There is nothing worse than the feeling of helplessness. I would start to cry as I watched him sleep and thanked God that I had him for another day.
The good news is that my father was able to quit smoking. He quit cold turkey the day that he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had the strength all along to quit. He had the strength when I was a kid. Your father has the strength too. I just wish that my father would have listened to his teenage twin boys when we were trying to get him to quit years ago, like you are doing so now. I wish that he realized that we were not trying to get him to quit, we were just trying to get him to live longer. I believe that, if my father would have quit when I was still young, he would still be with me today. My mother lives with us and she is 93 years old and still going strong. She tried to get him to quit too.
I know that my father wishes that he would have listened to us too. I am sure that he loves us and misses us as much as we love and miss him. I am 55 years old now and, as I read this letter, my eyes are filling up with tears over the loss of my dad. God, do I miss him.
Please feel free to share this with your father, if you wish.

John, just think what you could do with all the money you'll save!(LOL) Seriously though, good luck - it is quite the ball and chain. I quit when I got pregnant w/ my daughter about 10 years ago, but I have to admit, when I'm out with my friends having a night on the town, I still crave them - probably always will.

Dear John
Quiting smoking is the hardest thing to do in my life. I do believe that you can do anything you set your mind to. Look at what a successful life you have had. You are a truley beautiful person. It comes from your soul. Good luck I have always been a fan of yours.

John! What the hell! I can't believe your still smoking!
Listen to me I quit a long time ago. give up 1 cigarette at a time. Pick one out don't smoke it. Start carrying around a quart bottle of water with lemon juice in it. Sip sip sip all the time. The lemon takes away the craving and the water flushes the nicotine out of you system. When you feel comfortable with not smoking that one cigarette ( it sometimes takes up to a week if it takes longer it's ok) then give up another. PRAY.Only in times of extreme craving do you take the chewing gum.It took me about 2 months to be totally free. And when you are NEVER put another one in your mouth not EVER.
