Oprah Donates $1.5-Million To Atlanta School

According to reports Thursday, Oprah Winfrey has donated $1.5 million to The Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, the school reported Thursday.

“I hope my gift will inspire others to join in to support RCA, a place that’s not only uplifting students but also training teachers across the globe how to do the same for their students,” Winfrey said in her note attached to the donation.

The school, which is described as one of the poorest in Atlanta, hopes to raise funds to build a cafeteria, gymnasium and theater.  The school currently runs on a $2.8-million budget which is almost entirely funded by donations.

Last year, Winfrey gave the school $365,000.

Winfrey has had Clark, who wrote the best-selling teaching book “The Essential 55,.” on her show twice.

The Ron Clark Academy, housed in a renovated red brick warehouse, is located in southwest Atlanta, Georgia, and accommodates fifth through eighth grade students. Students are from low wealth to high wealth families. Clark had planned to build the school for ten years before construction began, according to Wikipedia.
