When Heath Ledger unexpectedly died on January 22nd, 2008, he left a film project unfinished. Terry Gilliam directed the movie “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” which was only 2/3 of the way done when the actor passed away.
Gilliam had no plans to complete the film and thought it would be best to scrap the whole project which began filming in 2007. After a lot of inner debate and the advice of other people, he decided to get the script revised enough to finish the film.
The fantasy film involves lots of alter egos, dream worlds, romance and deceit. Lily Cole plays Valentine, the daughter of the doctor, who is the love interest of several characters. Verne Troyer and Christopher Plummer have starring roles as well.
Superstars Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law all stepped in to finish the film in Ledger’s place. The movie has some dialogue that references people dying too young and other lines that seem to speak of Ledger’s untimely death. Gilliam insists the script was not changed at all and the eery similarities to real life events were written long before the star’s passing.
