Well that didn’t work did it.
According to some reports, It looks as though NBC’s Jay Leno experiment has blown up in its face.
The New York Times, Deadline Hollywood, and pretty much every entertainment outlet – including us – is saying that Jay Leno will be moving back to late-night TV, possibly as early as March, after the Winter Olympics — maybe even sooner.
It looks like NBC’s pla to air The Jay Leno Show five nights a week at 10 p.m. is apparently such a ratings and monetary nightmare that the former late night king will move back to 11:35 p.m., where his show will air for 30 minutes.
Sources claim The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien will be shuffled to 12:05 a.m., with Late Night with Jimmy Fallon going to 1:05 a.m.
The Times says “NBC executives held extensive discussions with Mr. Leno and Mr. O’Brien on Thursday about the future of the network’s late-night lineup.”
“We remain committed to keeping Conan O’Brien on NBC,” the network said in a statement on Thursday. “He is a valued part of our late-night lineup … and is one of the most respected entertainers on television.”
While Leno made a couple of jokes about the rumoured cancellation in his monologue last night, O’Brien kept mum.
The Television Critics Association begins this weekend in Pasadena, Calif., and NBC’s session is on Sunday, where TVGuide.ca editor Amber Dowling will give us the official announcement.
NBC unveiled its revamped fall lineup last summer, eschewing dramas weeknights at 10 p.m. in favour of The Jay Leno Show moving in, giving the network a radical new look and raising eyebrows in the process about whether it would work.

NBC To Shuffle Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien And Jimmy Fallon: Reports

This shouldn’t be a surprise, as NBC is run by suits who have never had a creative thought in their lives. Simply looking for the short-term fix and a quick buck, they don’t realize that Conan on “The Tonight Show” is an investment, and if given due time, would surely bring in more revenue than this idiotic move ever will.
Not so. Conan has sucked ever since he got on tv. NBC still doesn’t get it. Only a half hour of Leno. Let him have his 1 hour spot back with the old writers and venue. Leno was great before the change.
You must be over 60. If you possibly can choose Leno over Conan
couldn’t agree more
jay leno isnt funny…he appeals to people who want to drone out and watch the guests.
conan is funny and IS the show.
Andy Richter must leave…he is not funny and dragging this show down.
hopefully conan gets to keep his show…or come to canada and do a show!
Conan is an idiot. He will never bring in the ratings or revenue Leno does. The reason there moving Leno back is because he kept people up to watch the local news. Now when hes done they flip off the tv and go to sleep.
Actually,
I watch the Daily Show and Colbert Report on Comedy Central. Those shows are hilarious and informative about real world events. In my humble opinion these shows are far superior to Leno, Letterman, or Conan (his show now).
Love Jay..cant stand Conan and Andy Richter is stupid. Jimmy Fallon is great. Letterman is gross and I think Freguson could be good if he didnt try to act ignorant with facial expressions and gestures like Letterman. So..Put Jay back where he was followed by Jimmy Fallon and then Conan if necessary. Conan is probably appreciated by liberal.
wow… you have issues. CONAN is good because hes funny. Leno is shit cuz hes not funny
Mr O’Brien is so into himself, he really doesn’t require “guest” spots on the “Tonight Show”. Perhaps this shuffle will emphasize that when he’s interviewing celebrities, it’s not all about Conan! Leno need to improve, but he’s heads above O’Brien. Perhaps Jimmy Fallon should be in the early slot.
This really sucks for Fallon who, surprisingly, has the best late night show on network tv.
I concur entirely.
It doesn’t make any sense to boot Conan because of Jay’s poor performance. Jays low ratings lead to lower ratings for the news and that leads to lower ratings for Conan. Its a chain reaction started by the Jay Leno Show that butchers Conans ratings. If Conan is gonna get screwed by NBC and Leno, he should go to CBS with Letterman and Ferguson. Together they can finish off NBC. Or he can go to ABC and set up an 11:35 show to lead into Jimmy Kimmels show. I am going to try to watch both Conan and Letterman tonight because Conan may announce his decision to stay or go, and Letterman might defend Conan and go after Leno.
Conan could NEVER carry the Tonight Show. He is a total loser! As a comedian he is a POOR excuse for one!
totally agree… fallon has a great show with mass appeal; conan needs more time to have his (time-slot) audience defined, letterman could be an in-valuable mentor to each
Nice try Jake, but then how do you explain Conan’s already pitiful ratings compared to Letterman’s back in June? Conan was already in trouble before Leno’s show even debuted.
I am retired and 70 years old. Jimmy Fallon is the high light of my TV life. Sure hope we don’t lose him.
Why not get rid of Leno and keep Conan and Fallon, the two that keep people of my generation watching the late night shows? I’ve not heard of anyone enjoying Leno’s humor or show.
I do.
Now you have.
Leno is awful and unfunny. He has what we refer to as (daddy humor). Its the kind of lame jokes you’d expect from someone who *thinks* they’re funny and we can indulge them but really no one sincerely enjoys anything they have to offer…. whereas Conan is freaking hilarious! He’s intelligent and astute. Just bag Leno. I was excited he was leaving television and then I found out he was just getting another stupid show of the same old tired crap. I guarantee his ratings will still suck. Like the above commenter said, he’s a vortex sucking everything else down.
If Conan is that good (and Jay so bad) how come Jay was at the TOP for years and years and Conan can hardly keep up. He’ll NEVER make it….his shows are poor and he is a terrible comedian. Admittedly Jay is getting on but he is still heads and heals above anything else on late night. Jimmy Kimmel has since gotten me since Jay was forced out. Ferguson is also very good but his guest list are often times pretty third rate.
Here’s a novel idea – Give Ferguson the NBC Tonight Show, leave Letterman and Fallon where they are, and let Conan go back to 12:30 with Ferguson’s current spot. Craig Ferguson is by far the best of the lot!
NBC should have left well enough alone to begin with. They should restore Jay Leno to the Tonight Show and Jimmy Fallon to his previous slot. If they want to keep Conan O’Brian, give him his own show in the slot that Jay now has. And then they need to quit meddeling with what works.
I must be one of the few people that do not like Conan. He is not funny. Jay Leno should be back where he belongs, then Jimmy Fallon (he IS funny!) and move Conan way back to late late night.
The Tonight Show always should have been David Letterman’s followed by Craig Ferguson!
i agree bout letterman and fergeson but i think conan should be in there to
Move Leno to BET – should reach his audience there
Don’t you understand the suits don’t care about what the public likes it is what the adverts like. Many great shows get cancelled or shuffled around so much you can’t find them then claim ratings drops. You would think with todays technology that they would not need the Nielsen (sp) ratings but cable boxes, sat dishes etc could tell them what is popular. There are some great shows on tv now but not enough. And enough with this reality stuff we are getting sick of it. Some is good, too much is crap. When have they ever really given us what we wanted. Really viewers do not seem to matter anymore. Also, put appropriate shows on at the proper times might be a better idea too….bunch of suit idiots IMHO
Leno is the best host of late night shows. Not sure why NBC gave his show to Conan. Leno’s Tonight Show ran a lot more smoothly and he has the perfect demeanor for the show. Conan just acts retarded and gets a bunch of pity laughter.
NBC was banking on Leno’s popularity and that failed.
I personally do not care for Conan, never thought that was the right move. Maybe it is time for Leno to move on. Maybe he should replace Oprah ha ha.
I am 69 years old and love..love…love Jay Leno. I think Conan is the worst late nite show I have ever seen and I have seen them all. I will be very glad to see Jan Leno at the end of my day again.
The best late night hosts are Letterman (most like Johnny Carson), Ferguson (always adorable and funny, just a little racy) and Fallon (articulate and charming with humility). Jimmy Fallon is NBC’s only hope of competing with Letterman, as Ferguson works for Dave and would be loyal to him. Leno should retire and publish a vintage car magazine. Conan should also find another career.
Conan used to be funny before he was given the tonight show slot. It seems like his writers had to make the material more mainstream and so he’s losing his self-deprecating, off-beat humor that made him appealing in the first place. I think it’s a good more to push the time back. And I agree with the person who said Jimmy Fallon is now the best late night host.
Jesus, Leno is still on the air?! I say hand Conan the crown and Leno can stick around to play sad clown if he wants.
Maybe if they move Jay back to after the news I will find a reason to leave the TV on. Now when Conan comes on I just turn it OFF – Never have liked him.
my opinion
in jays spot have “the craig ferson show or something like that”
tonight show – letterman (move time to when he wants it)
late night with conan
all on nbc
then on abc
jimmy kimmel live
late night with jimmy fallon or just can kimmel and abc take fallon
CONAN SUCKS, BRING BACK LENO 1000% BETTER THAN “WHO”
go to Hell,Both Conan,&,Jay Rock,Jimmy’s The 1 That Sucks!
Letterman is both intelligent and funny. Leno is an over-rated, way-over-compensated doofus. He should walk away gracefully while he still can.
Letterman sucks and is definitely not funny.
Since NBC’s 10:00pm time slot sucks, they’d be better off moving their news to 10:00. Then start Leno @ 10:30 and keep everyone else @ their present slots. To much thought process for NBC executives?
Now it sounds like Conan was offered a new time slot or leave the network. Bye Conan. Good riddance. You were never funny and I would never watch you. Hope you take NBC’s offer and leave.
a) Jay Leno’s “low ratings” aren’t an indication of failure on his part. His ratings are in fact on par with the ratings he had as a late night talk show host. The problem is that they’re nowhere near as good as the scripted dramas and comedies that compete at the 10PM prime time slot. Moving Jay Leno back to 11:30PM means moving those ratings, which are above both O’Brien and Letterman’s, back there as well so NBC can actually “win” at *something.*
b) Leno’s ratings being higher than O’Brien and Letterman’s are in no way indicative of the quality of his humor. Leno’s brand of humor is mild and lukewarm (funny considering he was known for his raunchiness and edginess as a standup comedian almost two decades ago). He earns those higher ratings because the core demographic of “The Tonight Show” which he inherited when he took over from Johnny Carson are conservative, traditional, religious middle-aged adults in the center of the United States. O’Brien and Letterman’s more sophisticated, edgy, smart humor rules the bigger “metro” markets like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, but they can’t compete in areas where Leno’s more tepid humor is aligned with the belief system.
c) As much as I enjoyed Jimmy Fallon on SNL and thought he could pick up where O’Brien left off, his show SUCKS. He’s characteristically unfunny, prone to many moments of silence or pity laughter, and does some of the lamest, most unsophisticated bits I’ve ever seen. As much as it pains me to say it, NBC made a huge mistake in putting Fallon in Late Late Night.
I have a great idea!Let’s dig up Johnny Carsons corps prop him up and stare at it for an hour. That’s probably as funny as Leno’s show.Ferguson is the only funny late nite on the air.The suits are always behind the curve.Creativity is ahead of the curve.NBC should just air a test pattern-it would probably get the same numbers as Leno.
If Leno’s show isn’t working it should be cancelled, not moved to a later time slot. leno had his time and its over.
Leno sucks
O’Brien sucks
Richter sucks
Fallon sucks
TV sucks
Everything sucks
It’s pretty simple.
Old people like Leno.
Young people like Conan.
Old people are going to die soon.
Hahaha, you have got to be kidding me yup. Talk about a bunch of midsleading generalizations. I suggest you got back to school and take “Introduction to Logic 101″ because you clearly don’t know how to form a coherent argument.
Leno is history. He has gone down hill for some time. Even Letterman was more funny when he was later. Conan was close to Letterman’s humor when he was later, but now that he is after the news, even he has lost much of his humor. I say can them all and bring in new talent. Can you imagine Late Night with Robin Williams.
I didn’t like Fallon on SNL. He ruined every sketch laughing. HOWEVER, his late night show is amazing! The funniest thing on TV. I had to force myself to give it a chance though because of SNL. Whoever said he sucks is crazy. You can’t top the Roots either.
I’m 53 and love Conan O’brien. I have been very happy that he was on earlier so I could watch him. Yes, his humore is silly even a la Python? but I laugh!!! Leno comes off as a dirty old man who’s full of himself! Falon, I don’t know- I was eager to watch him in the beiging but didn’t like him at all on his new show. I haven’t watched it lately but my impresion was then- anyone could do what he was doing- and better. Not to diminish his work on SNL.
I don’t want to lose Conan!
It is time for Jay to go! His show is not funny and unless you are collecting Social Security you aren’t watching it. Conan should be able to go back to his edgy humor at the later time slot though which was a lot better. The King of late night is by far and away Jimmy Fallon. He is freaking hiarious and the Roots best band in late night period!!!
Whatever they do, they have to keep Fallon. He is the freshest new thing on TV. Great show.
Leno sucks he should give it up.
Conan hasn’t been that great either since he hit the 11:30 slot.
At first I thought Fallon looked to stiff and just awkward but now it’s my favorite late night show he keeps me laughing.
maybe I’m the only one that agrees with this move? I love Leno and MAYBE could warm to Conan with time. Get Leno back for 5-10 yrs, build the Conan brand, and with a little more maturity and polish, Conan could be king. Right now, I can’t stand Conan, what a moron. He needs to learn.
Letterman is by far the best!
Like Groucho Marx on “You Bet Your Life”, he has a quick, genuine wit that few of his competitors can match.
Also,I have grown to like what Craig Ferguson is doing on his show. Maybe it’s just a case of finally catching on to his style of humor, but he can be very entertaining.
No one has even given Conan a chance…people just switch him off because of Jay. Keeping Leno on the air IS the problem. Leno comes across as a pervert, and his band sucks. Jimmy is funny but he needs to work on his reading skills….plus he doesn’t recover from the bad jokes like Conan does.
I was amazed how many people think conan is not funny and jay is, but then i remembered that over half of you idiots voted george w. bush in for a second term…..
now it all makes sense.
Most of you guys have no idea what you are talking about! Conan is, was, and always shall be a better Tonight Show host than Jay. I appreciate his ability to be hilariously silly without CONSTANTLY resorting to p3n!s and fart jokes like Jay. I enjoyed Jay when he was host, but still love Conan more than Jay.
I can’t believe Jay thought it would be a good idea to leave the Tonight Show only to do Tonight Show rip-off earlier in the evening! Stupid move NBC!
Conan is the MAN. Period. I always end up laughing my ass off watching his show. I am a 27 year old engineer, so maybe it’s the age genre, I never laugh at Jays shows. Ever. I’ve actually met Jay at his Vegas show and he’s an incredibly nice guy, just not very funny.
Jimmy Fallon and his show is far better than anything Leno or Conan has done in the last couple of years. I’d far prefer to watch Jimmy Fallon instead of Leno or O’Brien.
I seem to remember that Leno wanted to retire from the Tonight Show, then NBC replaced him with Conan. Then about a week or two later he changes his mind???? I hope Conan has really great lawyers, because that is ridiculous! Jay Leno’s show is not doing well because his humor is so sad and dried up, not because of the time slot. Conan should definately not be forced out of his time slot, also affecting Jimmy Fallon, both who are hilarious. What the hell NBC!
Fallon really surprised me how good he is at this, I did not care for him on SNL.
If Leno does this again (like with Letterman) he will be seen as even lower than he already is (most comedians see what he did with Letterman as back stabbing). From what I have been told the movie that was made(post Carson)thing) was far closer to the truth than Leno was comfortable with.
Ferguson is VERY good. When one considers how poorly supported his show is (lighting, guests, etc) it is even better. Letterman is still good but I get the impression he is tired of fighting with CBS about show content.
I agree with those who said Leno is “dad humor” very true. He is very middle America or republicans and old people like him. BECAUSE HE PLAYS IT SAFE. I feel bad for those who don’t get CONAN but CONAN is the best. I will admit he isn’t as edgy but he is on early and he is trying please all you OLD PEOPLE. Like someone else said, Old people will die soon and us younger people who will be around to see Conan want CONAN to stay. Also I didn’t like Fallon at first but he has gotten better. I use to watch Letterman over Leno but now that Conan is on early I watch Conan. I don’t care about Letterman anyway, he is a CHEATER, man whore. GO CONAN!!!!!!!
You guys who say Conan is not funny are complete idiots, Conan was one of the strongest writers on the Jay’s Tonight Show writing staff… he was the reason Jay had good jokes. Do research before you talk crap.
Whether you like one or the other, the fact is, Jay Leno screwed Conan. Conan, his staff & crew were happy with their situation & had to uproot their lives in the east. It was Jay’s selfish tomfoolery that led to the shuffling anyway. In my humble opinion, NBC should keep Conan & Fallon on their slots & give Leno a weekend slot. It’s a huge injustice to just move people like that.
Not that it matters to me who’s on at what time. We have Leno & Conan at noon & 1pm, respectively here in the Philippines. And Letterman has a different time slot. NBC should think about people who have worked hard, paid their dues, changed their lives for them. Treat them fairly!
I am 53, not on social security or an “old” person nor a senior citizen. Leno is the best. Conan has always sucked. He’s not funny. Let him go. And that awful Andy Richter. He has to go!
all you old people people who say conan isnt funny should jump off a bridge. You’re 40? yes you’re old. you’re opinion is null and void.
Conan to CBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course old people like Jay Leno better then Conan. But the youth are the future fans of television and Conan is much more relevant to the youth then Jay Leno. Jay is a thing of the past, keep him there!
