The battle between talk show hosts Jay Leno and Conan O’Brian continue as NBC network executives announce the termination of The Jay Leno Show, and moving The Tonight Show to a new time slot. Negotiations are currently underway between the two hosts and the network. The latest in the passing of the torch debacle stems around the decision to put Jay Leno back on at 11:35pm and moving The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brian to a later, 12:05am time slot.
According to NBC, airing The Jay Leno show at 10:00pm has caused much grief for affiliate stations who were so unhappy with the show in this time slot that they were ready to boycott the network. It appears that the less than stellar ratings brought on by the new show were also affecting the ratings of affiliate news casts and some believe, The Tonight Show as well. Until recently, NBC has always aired a drama series in the 10:00pm time slot but in an attempt to save money, the network decided to instead try a less costly talk show, hosted by Leno.
Conan O’Brien is understandably unhappy with the networks decision to “move The Tonight Show to tomorrow” and has stated that he will not take any part in the destruction of the network. It appears that the network decision has backfired and is the hottest topic among night show talk hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman, and Craig Ferguson who are all jumping the O’Brien bandwagon.
