American Idol in Atlanta broke the rules, the age rules that is, when they allowed novelty rapper and 62-year old General Larry Platt to perform the oddly catchy and instant viral hit “Pants on the Ground.” Platt was the act saved for last and likely the highlight of the ninth season’s second night.
The show began and had its tone set by Randy reluctant to leave his car and Simon walking off the set with a migraine. Perhaps this was meant to serve as foreshadowing of how viewers would feel after watching a series of forgettable acts. That is not to say the night was fruitless. There were golden tickets handed out but much of what came between is blur.
Simon as always provided notable moments of laughter, such as when he aimed his best insult of the show at Lathan Davenport, whose singing Simon suggested was “Like a cat barking … it shouldn’t happen.” There were other memorable guests, such as Lamar Royal, 20, who erupted into a tirade of beeped-out F-bombs when told he was not ready for Hollywood.
