Dennis Hopper, who is is reportedly dying from prostate cancer, wants a divorce.
The American actor officially filed for divorce Thursday in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences with Victoria Duffy, who was his wife for nearly 14 years.
“I wasn’t aware of any problems,” a family friend told ABCNews.com. “This was all a surprise to me. They came to visit us two years ago, and nothing seemed to be disturbing. Everything was just absolutely fine.”
A friend of the family suggest the reason for the divorce may be money related.
“It’s just so screwed up,” a friend of Duffy-Hopper’s family told ABCNews.com. “Maybe it’s a money thing.”
The source also noted that there has been tension between Duffy and Marin Hopper, one of Hopper’s older children from a previous marriage.
“Marin is living there at the house with them now, as I understand, and [Hopper] apparently wanted her to become the executor of the will,” the friend said. “If he’s dying in the next four weeks, what good is this going to do? It must be the money.”
In a statement quoted by Reuters Monday, Hopper said, “I wish Victoria the best but only want to spend these difficult days surrounded by my children and close friends,” while daughter Marin Hopper said, “Dennis is brave, and he is fighting a hell of a battle.”
The actor who has been fighting against prostate cancer, and in October he canceled all travel plans to focus on his treatment.
The star of “Easy Rider” is requesting joint custody of their six-year-old daughter, and proposes to pay alimony to Victoria Duffy.
The source says that Hopper has roughly four weeks to live.

Dear Victoria,
I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I am reaching out to you now to send my prayers support during this hard time and to tell you I think of you and remeber you fondly every time I’ve seen Dennis over the years.
You and I were once good pals when we worked as servers and bartenders at “Live Bait” on 23rd Streeet in NYC in the late 1980′s together. We were both aspiring actresses and eventually, we both left for L.A. My name then was Barbara Hubbard. In L.A., I got married for a brief time to Kirk Bernard, and my name was Barbara H. Barron (You can find me on the ImDb also).
The last time we saw each other was at The North Beach Cafe in Venice. Then you married Dennis.
If you would like to get in touch for a “catch-up” chat, my mobile is 602-390-0128, or you can e-mail me. I’m now re-married for 16 years, and have two awesome kids. We live in Scottsdale, AZ.
God bless you, Vicotria. Hang in there. Hope to hear from you.
Your friend, Barb Bowman
I’m sorry to hear that Dennis Hooper is not doing well fighting his battle with cancer. The above article states that he has 4 weeks to live. That seems odd since a divorce takes longer than that too complete…..Prayers to out to him and his family!

To Barb – I’m not sure this was the best forum to list your cell number. I think I would have tried to reach her thru other sources, such as the Imdb or Dennis’ agent.

What a horrible thing to have to go through at a point when he should be resting. The transition from life to death should be a time of being with loved ones be it family or friends for a time of quiet reflection. I would like to refer the family to read this short book: http://crossingthecreek.com/index.html It will help them experience the dying process and make it easier on Dennis.
Jeez, is everyone on here trying to sell something?
As for Ms. Bowman, are you joking? NO ONE leaves their cell phone on a public forum – if they want to maintain their privacy and sanity. As someone else pointed out, surely you could have found more appropriate and private means of contacting a former friend.
My best to Dennis Hopper. He’s one of a kind, a pure maverick as both a person and as an artist.
If they fill like leaving thier telephone number thats there bussiness, nobody really gives a flip about it, but you….., and Victoria maybe, and i would lay you 10 to 1 odds Victoria calls her ……….
Dennis, I know several terminal patients who were cured of cancer at Hoxsey Clinic. One Mr. Handman who lives in Lytle Creek was grade 4, given no hope with conventional treatment, and was in terrable pain. HC cured his prostate cancer and he actively gets around pain free to this day. May God Bless You
