Mark Kerrigan, the brother of famed Olympic skater Nancy Kerrigan, is being charged following the death of his father. Daniel Kerrigan, who was 70 upon his passing Sunday night, was the father of both Nancy and Mark and died of a heart attack following a fight with his son. Mark Kerrigan was charged with assault to an elderly person causing significant bodily harm. On Monday, Mark Kerrigan plead not guilty to all charges. According to state officials, Mark Kerrigan will not be able to attend his father’s wake or funeral service. This is because of Department of Corrections policies which prevent prisoners from attending these services.
This not the first time Mark Kerrigan has been accused of being abusive. In 2007, Kerrigan’s wife, Janet, was granted a divorce by the Middlesex Family Court on the grounds that Mark Kerrigan had been physically abusive. The former wife had taken out a restraining order against Kerrigan saying that throughout their relationship he had been abusive and threatened her life. She further stated that he had punched her in the face, slashed her tires, and sent criminals to visit her.
Neither Mark or Nancy Kerrigan were available for comment. The Kerrigan family has remained in seclusion since the death.
