The name Rip Torn is not one that has made headlines over the past several years and the esteemed actor’s return to the spotlight has not been based on his thespian merits. Torn is currently headed to rehab after a bizarre attempt to break into a bank in Connecticut.

Torn, 78, was found inside the bank after hours in a drunken state. When police found him, he was armed with a loaded gun but did not present any threat to the arresting officers. He has been charged with a series of criminal counts including trespass, burglary, and weapons violations. Per his attorney, Torn entered the bank thinking that it was his home and had no real intention to cause mischief.

Torn is currently out on bail and is headed for a stay in rehab to deal with the intoxication issue. On February 17, he will once again appear in court where he is expected to plead “not guilty” to the charges that he faces.

The arrest is a fall from grace for the Emmy winning and Oscar nominated actor. Torn had been an accomplished actor through several decades of television and film work and is currently featured in a supporting role in the series 30 ROCK.
