A twenty-five-year-old classic is being remade in a new millennium to support a new cause. “We Are the World,” written in 1985 by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie to benefit African famine relief, is being re-recorded by some of today’s most popular artists in order to raise funds to provide aid for earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
Seventy-five singers contributed to the 2010 version of the song, including such diverse names as Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, Barbara Streisand, Lil’ Wayne, Celine Dion, Brian Wilson, and Enrique Inglesias. In a tribute to the original effort, the new recording was made in the same studio as the original, Henson Recording Studios, located in Hollywood, on February 1. Screenwriter and director Paul Haggis (In the Valley of Elah) directed the video for the song, which is set to appear on February 12 on NBC during the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics.
The original recording of “We Are the World” raised over $60 million dollars for the organization USA for Africa. Its lyrics urge listeners to “heed a certain call” and “start giving.” Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake on January 12, which has left approximately 200,000 people dead and over a million more homeless.
