Did “Idol” Bikini Boy Deserve Air Time?

American Idol held auditions in Denver, which aired this week. While the singing hopefuls were largely forgettable, some came to the audition with a gimmick to get them noticed by the judges.

Ty Hammerling was one of these people. America saw him dressed in a bikini as he performed Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Achy Breaky Heart”. The performance referenced last year’s “Bikini Girl” audition, the infamous performance where Katrina Darrell sang while dressed only in a bikini and angered judge Kara DioGuardi. When 25 year-old Hammerling recreated the “Bikini Girl” look and began to shake his hips as he sang, the entire panel of judges got up and walked out of the audition room, leaving Hamerling and the cameraman alone on the room. Before departing, DioGuardi said, “Not a good look”.

As it turns out, Hammerling was working as “the intern stunt guy” at a local radio station. As an intern at KWOF-FM, Hammerling regularly performs funny stunts for the station’s morning “Jesse and Shotgun” show, which ended in December. The bikini audition also marked the end Hammerling’s employment with KWOF-FM. He claims the producers of Idol promised to let him audition if he kept quiet about working in the media.
