Although CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric may be dating a man who is seventeen years younger, she does not appreciate being called a cougar.
When asked about the title in a recent issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Couric calls the label “stupid” stating that the label is based on assumption that the older woman is always the pursuer in such a relationship even though in many cases the exact opposite may be true.
She goes on to say that such assumptions are “silly”.
Katie Couric is 53 years old, and she is dating Brooks Perlin. Despite their seemingly large age gap, Couric says that the couple has no problems based upon their ages even though Perlin has never been married and does not have children.
Couric, on the other hand, has two daughters from her previous marriage to NBC News legal analyst Jay Monahan who passed away due to cancer at the age of 42. In her interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she told the magazine that being a single mother to two girls is difficult, especially when one becomes ill. She went on to say that in such times she feels very alone and that she misses having a partner.
she is right being labeled a “couger”, which invokes power and sexyness, IS stupid. we should go back to calling old woemen “old Hags” like we used to and genraly ignore them. pick one Couric “couger” or “hag”!

I would consider “cougar” to be complimentary. Cougar would apply to an attractive lady, a lady who is attractive to younger men.
What is wrong with that?
I don’t think anyone goes through the exhaustive thought process of trying to attach something negative to that. If they do, so what? That’s their problem.
If the shoe fits, wear it! A cougar is a cougar. Why any woman, would want a younger man in the first place, is beyond me. It must be for the sex. If I wanted to raise another kid, I’d have gotten pregnant again.

Deb… give me a break… this is 2010… I am a COUGAR and PROUD of it!!! My husband is 22 years younger than me… and guess what!??! HE was the one doing all the prowing!!! I understand where Katie is coming from… the ‘label’ she refers to is the fact that people think we have NOTHING better to do than to go after much younger guys…when in reality it’s the TOTAL OPPOSITE!!!
Ask around dear… do a survey if you don’t believe me….there are TONS of YOUNG MEN that do not like to date younger woman…they feel that younger girls/women are only after MONEY and being taken care of… and to them, being with an older woman who is more polished, and more established is the ULTIMATE TURN ON!!!! This is NOT about raising a ‘boy’… is about enjoying being equally active with someone attractive and full of life… MOST MEN MY AGE (54) are OLD DUDS that just want a woman to cater to their every whim… mostly stay home watching tv instead of enyoying life and letting the last few good years pass by!!! Are you kidding, My wife is older than I am and it has made or romantic life fun because I will call her cougar. In response she growls and we laugh. I think it has helped her transition into her forties and I feel it make her sexy. I think she is. So don’t knock it until you try it.

Katie is right. The term “Cougar” implies an older woman who is predatory, chasing and taking advantage of the poor young defenseless men (oh, please, give me a break). I think its stupid and offensive and frankly, I won’t even watch a tv show with the name.
